Is he Human or Clone, or something else? Also, what are the rest of the characters in Final Fantasy VII? Are these Humans set in a different world or alternate universe?

He's actually a demon. If you get the hidden scene in Clouds hometown you get to see that he and the Town are actually devil worshippers. The devil who goes by the name of Jenova has infected Clouds body with demon cells, so the demon cells eventually start taking over his body. When you met Tifa and Mr T, Cloud has become a full fledged demon or belsebub.

Nice summary. I think this helps explain a lot of the "gaps" people have had about the story over the years. I think people also got confused when Sephiroth tells Cloud he is a clone, but like you said, he really isn't. He's just had the cells injected into his body.

The description you gave of Jenova at the end makes it seem a little like Lavos from Chrono Trigger.
