They should have left FF7 alone :/

I remember after beating ff7, long before any spin-offs came out, I was in awe. the ending was so beautiful in many ways. The fact that it closed with the climax of Meteor, the Lifestream, and Holy connecting, and everyone being blinded by light, leaving the audience with no clue to the fate of the planet was so poetic to me. The very last shot is Aeris's face rising.

After the credits, and Red XIII's 500 years later, my assumption was that the human race was killed off by the Meteor event. and to me, it was such a beautiful way to end it all. It is exactly what you wouldnt expect, the heroes of the human race did their best to defend the planet against Meteor. but in the end, humans had no power at all and no matter how connected you are with them, it was the planet's fight, not theirs. it was the humanity's fault that the planet was in the state it was, And perhaps the death of the human race was the planet's way of starting over.

I dont know if you agree, but I believe the only reason they made the 'ff7 compilation' was for money, and because they tried to milk the success of the original. The prequels and sequels are so poorly and quickly put together, its just such a shame. I liked it better when I thought the world of ff7 had been wiped out, and when the heroes of ff7 weren't cliche. Though flawed, they fought until the end. To the death of the human race.

I don't like any of the compilation either.

The half-baked spin-offs are just as good as a game like this deserves.

reply

ok, so in your opinion, what would you consider to be a beautiful game?

reply

FF7's not a favorite game of mine, but I completely agree with your analysis. I, too, believed the human race had been wiped out and the ending was quite poignant.

I also heavily dislike the FF7 compilation. It's done a disservice to the entire series and I've developed a disdain for Cloud, Vincent, and Zack in those spin-offs (though I try hard not to let it bleed into how they are portrayed in FF7 itself).

I agree they should have just left it alone. The spin-offs and sequels/prequels (whatever) just couldn't hold up to the might and magic of the original.

Final Fantasy just doesn't work too well in movie form. The "original" movie was one of the worst things I ever saw and I was looking forward to the FFVII Movie when it was first mentioned, but wow was it dull.

Like you said, I think the ending to FFVII is open to interpretation. Personally I thought that Aeris was able to save everyone and the planet. The ending that you saw with Red XIII was indicating that everyone had moved away from Midgar since without the Mako reactors, there was no source of power to run the city.

Either way... great game and great story.

^^ Agree. The world had healed itself and the survivors had moved unto a different energy source. It was a great ending though i admit I still hate that Aeris had to die. I wish I had the older version where the 2 disk trick allows you to duplicate so that her "clone" is only killed :)

I always interpreted the ending as Midgar being the "real" culprit of draining the life source of the planet, and that the meteor/holy/lifestream "cleased" the planet of it. Of course, AC destroyed all of that.
