Whatever happened ?

It is now a PS4 remake.

The mythical potential remake of the game has never been anything more than rumor and conjecture by fans. Square has repeatedly gone on record expressing only a slight interest in pursuing a remake, despite fan outcry for one. Most of their statements regarding a remake could be paraphrased as "we might consider doing a remake in the future, but it's not a priority."

The "PS3 remake" that everyone went wild about a few years back was just a misunderstanding on the parts of fans. Square made a tech-demo showing what they could potentially do graphics-wise on the PS3, and decided to create a "video demo" that recreated the opening minute or so of the game with HD graphics. It was never anything more than a video-demo to show off the graphical capabilities of the PS3. But a lot of people misunderstood it, and thought the game was being remade, or would be remade. But there was never any official announcement, and square was pretty adamant that it was not a project they were pursuing.

Square had actually done something similar when the PS2 was released. (They re-created the ballroom scene from Final Fantasy VIII as a tech/video demo to show the PS2 capabilities) They were just doing the same thing again, but fans took it out of context.
