Does anyone know exactly how many edits/versions exist of this miniseries?
The original Artisan DVD in North America appears to contain the original NBC broadcast version, except with all parts edited into one and not divided into the original episodic format. Was this the cut also released on the 3 VHS set by mail order when it first aired?
The commercially released 2-tape/extended play version had a severly edited version. Can't remember exactly what got cut but it was very different. Amazon lists the runtime for this version as 390 minutes and the full DVD as 417. Did it really cut only a half-hour of material or is that number off?
Any other versions? Or specific details I'm failing to mention here? Did any overseas versions contain other differences? I seem to recall reading that one version in Europe contained at least a few additional scenes not aired in the states...
I watched the miniseries when it originally aired and have purchased the original 3-tape set (with the book and soundtrack) from the commercial that aired during the original broadcast, the 1-tape version (the collector in me wanted it), the 2-DVD (1 double-sided and 1 single-sided) set and the 3-DVD set.
The 3-tape, 2-DVD and 3-DVD sets are all the same original, uncut edits. The only thing different from them and the original airing are the open credits only appearing once (before part 1) and not appearing before any of the others (so the miniseries plays as if it's one long movie, though the fade outs at the end of the parts are still there, so viewers of the original miniseries who know where each part stopped and started are able to say "Oh, part 2 is starting").
The original part 1 ended with the queen's "pity the fool who tries to stand up to me" speech in front of Snow White's stepmother's painting. Part 2 ended with the Huntsman dragging Virginia into his tree by her cursed, long hair. Part 3 ended with the mirror (that's to be sold at auction) with a now very expensive price and Virginia saying "we'll never raise that" and the Huntsman looking on. And part 4 ended with Virginia and Tony emerging from the dragon mountain and seeing the queen, her mother, in the mirror Snow White gave to her and eventually realizing she must have another traveling mirror.
The 3-tape and 3-DVD versions are broken down as follows: tape/DVD 1 is parts 1 and 2, tape/DVD 2 is parts 3 and 4 and tape/DVD 3 is part 5. The 2-DVD version is: disc 1, side A is parts 1 and 2, disc 1, side B is parts 3 and 4 and disc 2 is part 5
The 1-tape version is in EP/SLP mode (very poor quality) and incredibly edited. It's not even worth watching. I never owned the 2-tape version (though, I did see it for rent in my video store a long time ago) so I can't really comment on that version's edit.
I'm from the U.S. so I don't know about any of the Europe edits either, so maybe someone else can answer that part of your question.
As far as any other edits that may exist, I do recall that when NBC REaired the series, they edited it differently (scenes were missing, there were 4 parts instead of 5 - I rememeber one part ended when Tony was in the chain gang at the prison and he threw the mirror onto the trash boat - it was edited like a cliffhanger where viewers were left to wonder if it smashed). I don't know if that edit was ever released, if that's the 2-tape version or not. I was so disgusted with the editing, I never finished REwatching it.
And as far as the new DVD set coming out March 12th from Mill Creek, according to their sell sheet (which you can read here: http://www.millcreekent.com/the-10th-kingdom-the-epic-miniseries-event .html), their's will be the original, unedited version. Their site labels the miniseries as parts 1-3, but I'm assuming it'll appear as it originally did on the out-of-print 3-tape, 2-DVD and 3-DVD versions with disc 1 playing the opening credits, parts 1 and 2 running together as one part, disc 2 having parts 3 and 4 running together and disc 3 having part 5.
By the way, I contacted Mill Creek to ask them about the opening credits to see if it will remain unedited (because their DVD art shows the World Trade Center digitally removed) and they said the credits (as far as they know) ARE as they appear when they originally aired, with the World Trade Center falling/shrinking and everything.
Thank you, Iaaat, for your very thorough answers! That's quite helpful and nice to know.
From what I'm aware of, the edit that appears on the single EP tape is the same as the one on the two-tape release. I expect the quality of the EP tape is terrible, I know how poorly EP recordings can be.
I'm from Europe and own the (European) DVD version on which the show plays like one long movie. I have no idea if it contains scenes that the US version doesn't have, though.
"Alone is what I have. Alone protects me." "No. Friends protect people."
The Dutch DVD is the longest cut. That one has several scenes that aren't in any Region 1 (American) release including Wolf's eyes turning red, a scene where the evil queen appears in a painting and bits and pieces of extra dialogue. It aired once in the US on Ion and I hunted it down on Amazon UK. It's not the usual region 2 version. It's actually listed as Extended cut.
