I'm a bit tired and finding the specific moments is like looking for a needle in a hey stack.
Most of the extended moments in the Dutch DVD are just longer parts of dialogue.
Here's a shot of wolf with red eyes (which does not exist on the Region 1 DVD). His eyes still turn yellow in this scene but they flash yellow twice and then turn red.
There's also a scene where she appears to wolf in a painting at some point in disc 2 but I am having trouble finding it, it's a very, very brief scene.
This is all on the region 2 Dutch cut of 10th Kingdom which the UK Amazon has several reviews claiming it's not really extended. As someone who had the American cut virtually memorized for almost a decade, yes, the Dutch cut is longer. Mostly it's just longer chunks of dialogue here and there but there are a few actual images that are not in the American cut. I wish I could find the scene with the painting for you but I'm too busy to watch the whole thing all the way through right now.
Do you still have a copy of the American release or are you going from memory? I checked both my 3-disc Hallmark set and the new Mill Creek set and the eyes flash red in both of them, right after he rips free from the ropes.
There is a very old message posted (from 2001) on the internet from "Michaela" from "The 10th Kingdom Video Archive" and it explains some deleted scenes that aired in the UK in 2001. Are any of these on the release you have? If so, could you post screen captures or videos?
Hey, everyone,
Is anyone here watching the repeat of the 10th Kingdom on Sky One in the UK?
I've been missing it but caught it tonight and then scrambled looking for a blank tape as this version has scenes that weren't in it before!
Since Sky One is showing it in an hour slot once a week, I guess they don't feel the need to cut scenes for time or follow the format that was shown in the US the first time round. What seems strange to me though is why these cut scenes are being shown on Sky One but aren't available on the video box-set over here or even the US DVD version.
The scene I caught tonight but missed taping were the Troll King telling his children that by returning to the prison they could put powder at the door - that way when Virginia returns to the prison wearing the invisible shoes they will see her footprints and know she is there.
Another scene was the three trolls searching/keeping an eye out for Virginia at the prison and laying the powder by the door, and then the invisible Wolf & Virginia getting into the prison by knocking on the door, a guard comes out doesn't see anyone, and they slip on in leaving the guard scratching his head but also leaving footprints behind.
The scene I did get on tape was the three trolls realising that Virginia is in the prison as they find her footprints and rush to tell the Troll King. It was a really short scene though but I will try and have it up on my site asap.
I'm hoping that we will see more deleted scenes. Like Wolf kneeling smelling what was it troll moss? Or dwarf moss? The burying the axe scene; and the fate of the three trolls that was filmed but not shown.
I think those are in there, I need to set aside a day where I can watch the whole thing again. The Dutch DVD definitely has everything because that's the version Ion aired and Ion aired a version that was longer than what NBC aired. when I inquired about why theirs was longer I was told that they had a region 2 Dutch DVD set and that's what was used for the Broadcast. That was around 2008.
I still have the American DVD but I honestly do not recall the red eyes in the American DVD. I'll check later.
I know that somewhere on the dutch DVD is a scene where The queen talks to Wolf from a painting, and that's not on my American copy. There's also fragments of dialogue in the Dutch DVD that is not in the American cut.
I wish you had asked me about this five or six years ago. It's all a blur to me now.
I haven't seen the Mill Creek DVD yet.
Versions I have:
The 3 Disc DVD 2004 reprint (It stills tells you to flip to side B ect even though each disc is one sided).
Original 3 VHS tapes with NBC logo (the one without the logo is cut down).
And the Dutch DVD which is also 3 disc, plays at a faster speed yet has a longer running length than the American one by a good twenty minutes or more.
Man, I wish I could afford a region free DVD player. I'd buy the Dutch release and go through it myself. I haven't seen it in a couple years and it would be fun discovering new scenes.
The Mill Creek version is identical to the original NBC version and the Hallmark DVD version.
The versions I have: The original 3-tape version NBC sold right after the original airing, the 1-tape, severely edited version (I bought it thinking "Wow, they fit the entire thing on one tape?" and I didn't realize until I put it in that it was edited), the 3-disc Hallmark Entertainment version and the 3-disc Mill Creek version. I used to have the 2-disc Hallmark version (1 double-sided disc and 1 single-sided disc), but I sold it when I found the 3-disc version because it was starting to get scratched from me watching it so many times.
I'm re-watching the Dutch DVD right now as we speak . Bear with me. It's been a very long time since I watched either this or the Dutch cut, at least five years.
I have uploaded everything that may or may not be something that does not exist in the region 1 DVD. I know there is more on the Dutch DVDs than on the American DVDs but I think most of it was on the second disc and start of the third disc. With disc 1 I was kind of grasping and going "Did this happen in the American DVD? I don't remember." So if these are scenes that are actually in the American DVD I apologize. I'm groping through memories. I watch a LOT of stuff.
A lot of what I feel is in the Dutch version are tiny little moments and fragments of dialogue. The bigger stuff is on disc 2, which I am starting right now.
First when Prince Wendell arrives at the prison we get pretty graphic scene of this poor guy impaled on the door. I know we see him in the American version but the scene seems to linger longer.
Virginia wakes up at her grandmother's. Prince Wendell is laying on her. First we see her laying there, obviously topless, breasts covered. But then she draws back the blanket and it's revealed Wendell has been laying on her all night. I'm pretty sure this is in the American cut but I think it was drawn out longer here.
While Virginia is in the troll king's magick invisibility shoes in the Beanstalk forest we actually see her invisible silhouette dancing around and even stretching.
Her finding the tree before wolf eventually finds her. I am very much aware that wolf finding her at the tree (following her by scent) is in the American DVD but I could not recall if we saw invisible Virginia making her way to the tree.
This one it's hard to say. I recall we see Acorn shaving in the American DVD but in this one after he is done shaving he examines his face and leans in for a closer look on what is clearly his blind side. He stops, pauses, gives a gesture indicating "What am I? An idiot?" and then swaps sides.
One of many, many shots of the troll kids in a row boat. There are so many of these shots that I can't tell you for sure how many are in which version.
The troll kids fleeing rather quickly. After they disappoint the Queen she actually cuts open each of their cheeks with a wide spread smack that somehow made each of them bleed. They then hastily flee the castle. I remember the smack in the American cut but not the rest.
First image from disc 2 (as I only just started re-watching this one).
After the conversation about seating arrangements and possible war the men in Wendell's castle agree that what they discuss should not leave the room. The camera then pans up to a mirror over the door where The Queen is obviously watching. It then cuts to her, watching the men from her mirror. I know part of this is not in the American cut. If you need a shot of the mirror in the conference room I can get that too.
Bear with me, I'm going by memory. I seem to recall most of the cut stuff is actually in disc 2 and start of disc 3. It's only roughly twenty minutes longer than most DVD releases so it could be stretched out tiny moments here and there. The trouble is remembering which tiny moments they were.
Whoops, one of those links is a dud / accidental double post of Virgnia going to the tree. Other invisible perspective shot from Virginia's adventure in slipper land.
I'm re-watching the Dutch DVD right now as we speak . Bear with me. It's been a very long time since I watched either this or the Dutch cut, at least five years.
Correction, that should say "It's been a very long timce since I watched either this or the American cut".
The reason I'm not editing the original post is it'll screw up the photobucket links.
Pausing for now but here's some from disc 2. Some of these I am absolutely certain are not on the American DVD. Remember, it's been a long time for me so many of these might just be bits and pieces I forgot.
The Huntsman talks to The queen with a tiny pocket mirror.
The Queen tries to warm The Troll king that the other kingdoms would not tolerate it if the 4th kingdom would fall, their armies would pounce and he replies with "Then I will kill them all!"
The man reaches the hunting lodge and after knocking and getting no answer he walks around the whole of the house before finally tripping the huntsman's trap (I know tripping the trap is in the American cut).
Virginia and Tony go out to see what's going on with the shrieking of "Wolf wolf!" and are actually walking by the whole wolf-mask reenactment thing. You can hear the judge day "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in" and lots of teasing as one girl is carried off. They get to the inn and we get a full shot of the sign outside. It's the Baa Bar
And I think he's won or something. He's overly amused by his game. The man about to hang up the sign with the prizes moves behind him and then hangs it up.
Again, bear with me if the majority of these are in the American DVD. It's been a long time. By the way, I can't find the eyes turning red on my American disc but his eyes definitely turn red here on the Dutch DVD. Are you sure yours has the eyes turning red?
Thanks for doing all of that! Unfortunately, I just went through my DVD and all of those shots are in it. The only thing that doesn't appear to be is the line of dialogue you mentioned from this scene:
"After being told where they might find the judge, the woman adds that they have "lovely food there. And then somewhat bitterly "Lovely everything...""
The dialogue in mine goes, "They do lovely food there, too. Well, that's the understatement of the year." Then she walks out and Wolf has his stomach cramp. She never says "Lovely everything..."
And yes, Wolf's eyes turn red. The Queen (in the trough after telling him to kill Virginia and Wolf screaming "NO!" twice) disappears after saying "DO IT!" Wolf's eyes turn yellow. He jerks to the right and his face cracks. He jerks back to the left and he grows fangs (eyes are still yellow). From the front we see Wolf's vein in his neck bulging. The camera cuts to a close-up of his face. He drops his head and looks directly in the camera. His eyes turn yellow and he shows his fangs. The ropes break on his left arm and chest. Then there's another close-up of his face - his eyes go from yellow to red and he smiles, with his fangs hanging over his bottom lip.
They also turn red for a brief second as Sally Peep walks away crying after losing the competition. Wolf is standing facing a tree, turns around, growl and his eyes turn yellow, then red.
You're right, it was "Well, that's the understatement of the year."
Now let's see if these are familiar to you. Also please make sure your copy that you're comparing this to is a Region 1 3 disc DVD set, that's the basis for comparison I'd like to make.
The queen appearing to Wolf in the Full Moon itself.
Sally Peep calling Wilf by name, telling him that he promised her she'd win and he says something to the effect of they must have gotten a hold of the magick well water. That's the only explanation. She promises that he'll pay for her losing.
I am pretty sure this is not in the Region 1 DVD because I recall initially being surprised by the "Wilf" thing when Wolf was exonerated.
Wolf watching the two shepherdesses after muttering to himself that he has to keep it together that he has time to kill, time to kill, time to... kill.
More to come, I'm trying to pinpoint what the differences are while my memory of the original DVDs aren't as sharp as they used to be.
I think I'm starting to hit the bigger stuff so I'm pausing more frequently to take screen grabs. I am fairly certain most of the cut stuff is on disc 2 so bear with me.
Tell me if these are familiar. Make sure your basis for comparison is the original 3 disc DVD, not the new one. o Wolf looking oddly vampiric as he watches Sally Peep leaving the competition. He also had these fangs when he burst from Virginia's ropes but I'm fairly sure that scene is in the American DVD, not so much sure with this one.
The troll king gets a second bloody nose from being summoned by The queen. He demands one of his goblin men (not his children this time) find him a mirror. They bring him a shard of a large broken mirror.
The queen warns that he will be over run and they will lose the kingdom unless he ceases fighting. He spits something green on the mirror and tells her "I'm taking the kingdom and then I'm coming for you, you evil pig!" I could swear the only time he called her "Evil Pig" on the other DVD was when he thought she killed his children.
One of Wendell's own men rants that Wendell is not fit to be king because he's missing. He then demands that the one taking dictation write that down. "WRITE IT DOWN!" (That Wendell is not fit to be king).
I'm going by the Hallmark Home Entertainment 3-Disc version. Proof of Purchase/Catalog number 12718. It comes in the thick, black case about an inch thick, that opens twice, almost like they glued two Amaray cases together (but they didn't).
Here are the time codes to the recent shots you mentioned (which are all in the R1 release, too)
Queen in the full moon: Disc 2, 0:38:21

Wolf's "Time to kill" scene Disc 2, starts at 0:46:47 (your shot at 0:47:13)
I'll find (again) and time the others later tonight/tomorrow when I have the time so you can check them on your R1 copy.
The troll king arrives at the apple orchard an hour early. His captain asks why they are there so early and he explains his plan to surprise the queen. The troll king then bites into one of the apples.
This version has a running length of 466 (and it's region 2, it plays faster)
while the Region 1 version says it's 447 minutes.
Even if it's counting the bonus material the speed at which it plays should account for that, there's still some minutes left unaccounted for. So there must be some difference.
All the ones you've mentioned are on mine, too. Have you checked yours to see if they're on yours, too?

Here are my runtimes:
Hallmark version:
Cover says 417 minutes (doesn't seem to include the "Making of..." time)
Part 1 (half of Disc 1): 1:24:36 (which includes the 1:19 opening) Part 2 (half of Disc 1): 1:22:11 Part 3 (half of Disc 2): 1:22:51 Part 4 (half of Disc 2): 1:22:35 Part 5 (Disc 3): 1:23:46 (which includes the 1:22 end credits) "Making of..." Special: 22:26
Total (without "Making of..."): 415 minutes, 59 seconds Total (with "Making of..."): 438 minutes, 25 seconds
Mill Creek version:
Cover says 7 hours, 27 minutes (or 447 minutes, which seems to include the "Making of..." time)
Part 1: 1:25:45 (which includes the 1:19 opening AND a 2:25 end credits) Part 2: 1:24:39 (which includes a 1:17 opening AND a 1:19 end credits) Part 3: 1:25:20 (which includes a 1:20 opening AND a 1:05 end credits) Part 4: 1:24:37 (which includes a :55 opening AND a 1:05 end credits) Part 5: 1:24:29 (which includes a :55 opening AND a 1:05 end credits) "Making of..." Special: 22:26
Total (without "Making of..."): 424 minutes, 50 seconds Total (with "Making of..."): 447 minutes, 16 seconds
As you can see the runtime differences between the Mill Creek version and the original Hallmark version are due to the addition of opening and closing credits to EVERY part, not just an opening at the beginning of Part 1 and an end credits and the end of Part 5). Also, some of the Mill Creek versions without the opening and ending credits run a couple seconds longer, but that probably has to do with the time between "commercial breaks" being a second longer or the opening being a little longer, etc...)
Can you time yours and compare? Maybe the 466 runtime on the cover is a mistake/typo? Maybe they meant to put 446 instead of 466? Does the Dutch version come with opening and closing credits with each part? Are they the same (time-wise) as the ones I've listed? Is the Dutch version split up the same way as the American one, into 5 parts (or 3 if they lumped 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 together)? There was a version of the miniseries that was split into 10 parts, which would have added more breaks than were originally there, which may account for some of the extra time.
Hmm... But, I don't know... there's just GOT to be some explanation for this and we've got to figure it out.
I've decided to run each disc's main feature on VLC player to get the most accurate running time possible.
And the opening is only on disc 1 and the closing on disc 3.
Disc 1 - 2 hours, forty seven minutes and two seconds (main feature).
Disc 2 - 2 hours, forty five minutes and forty seconds (main feature).
Disc 3 - One hour, twenty three minutes and twenty nine seconds (main feature).
This gives a grand total of
416 minute and 11 seconds (if my math is right, I'm a bit tired) which actually makes it a minute under the most common running length (and yes, means it's mislabeled) but at the same time this is a region 2 DVD set. It should be playing at a faster speed.
Usually (and this is from experience) 2 and a half hour movie played at NTSC (Region 1) speed will come to fifteen minutes longer than a PAL (Region 2) recording of that same film. So even with the nearly identical running lengths there's something unaccounted for here or it's running length should be a good half an hour shorter.
I'll keep watching, I'm nearing the end of disc 2 though.
The region 1 set I am comparing this to was sold through Artisan Home Entertainment. I had the Artisan one for years and then got myself the Dutch - Netherlands version five or six years ago.
Tony and Virginia show up at the metal shop only to find the troll kids. "Oh, God, they're back!" Tony exclaims. They run The troll kids try to give chase but get bad cramps.
Tony with the Wasps Nest. I could swear in the original DVD he just mentions it later "What are the odds of that?" but here we actually see him with the wasp nest.
re: VLC player - I don't have that on my computer but Googling around, I've discovered there's some settings in VLC player that allow you to switch playback from PAL to NTSC and back to PAL. When you put the Dutch DVD in your computer, were the VLC settings on NTSC or PAL? If the disc is in PAL and you play it at NTSC, and it is indeed extended, it should run longer than the U.S. release.
The DVD I'm going by is the Hallmark Home Entertainment/Artisan Home Entertainment version, too.
And all of those scenes/shots are in my version, too. Have you checked to see if they are in your region 1 version or not?
Trolls back: Disc 2, 2:08:30
Prince talking about going to the mountain as a "young pup": Disc 2, 2:10:29
Tony with the wasp nest on his hand: Disc 2, 2:15:34
Tony with wasps on his hand: Disc 2, 2:15:35
One of the trolls cutting himself: Disc 2, 2:17:10
By the way, I thought maybe the first time you saw T10K, you had seen the edited for VHS version, but I popped that in a little while ago and some of the scenes you think are new to the Dutch DVD are in that edited version, too, so that can't be it.
Check your region 1 release to see if the scenes you think are new are in it. Maybe your region 1 release is edited somehow? I don't know how else to explain it.
I don't have a lot of time to do this. I appreciate the effort you're putting into checking the corresponding scenes.
I have the VHS versions but the comparison I'm making is with the Artisan Home Entertainment DVD set to this one. The trouble is it's been a very long time for me since I watched the Artisan disc so I'm pretty much trying to guess "Was this on that version or not?"
Seven or eight years ago I knew the mini-series almost by heart. Not so much now.
Years ago Ion fully admitted that the version they aired was longer than most editions of the movie (and when I had watched it there definitely were scenes not in the Artistan DVD). And when I asked which one they showed this is the one I was pointed toward.
