How do Lewis and Fuller know that Rusty Nail is even in the same area as they are?
The guys play their prank on him, ask him to swing by the motel, but does Rusty ever give them his location? He could be... anywhere.
I don't know what the exact radius of a CB radio's signal is, but since the one trucker warns them of cops in Jamestown (Fuller states Jamestown is 40 miles away from where they are) they must reach quite a distance.
Omnipresent? That's what makes him so terrifyingly creepy. He could literally be anywhere. He could be right next door. Or right behind you. He's watching you. He can see you but you cannot see him.
Why would Rusty Nail give them his location?
Fuller says the radius is about 30 miles but you'd have to have a really powerful antenna to reach that far. Most of them have about a 5 mile range.
As for the information about the roads being clear of police, that likely would have been received from a driver who just came from that direction and is within 5 miles of them, not someone traveling in the same direction 40 miles away.
Fuller once mentions that the radius on the radio is about 8 km (5 miles).
