Why so many endings?

When it came out, DVD's were a new thing and I thought the multiple alternate endings was the coolest thing ever at the time, but it makes me wonder why they wrote and filmed so many? Especially when they are all so similar. I personally didn't like the one they ended up putting in the theatrical version. The part about the ice truck driver confused me somewhat.

DVDs were not new. I remember seeing DVD's at best buy around 1996/7. DVD was already 5 years old by that time.

That is like saying Blu Ray is a new thing today.

You can actually listen to the commentary with JJ Abrams, and he basically said, "Endings are hard." And it's true. They shot the other endings first before they decided to write a new one and reshoot the ending.

I actually remember an earlier version that was totally different.... where Charlotte was killed between two trucks.

ETA: wrong film, that scene was in "The Hitcher"
