When did Fuller and Lewis stop being 'safe'?

I saw the end of the film before I watched the film from the start. So yesterday when I watched it fresh, I knew what I was in for.

As the film proceeds I kept thinking whether or not lewis and fuller were 'safe' or 'unsafe' and I am struggling to deter when it changed for them.

The scene when they speak to Rusty Nail for the first time - SAFE
The flirting - SAFE
Rusty Nail arrives at room 17, and kills the man - They are still SAFE, the guys in room 18 were doing just abut what anyone else would do and that is report strange noises. So when Rusty Nail heard all the phones ringing, he couldn't of suspected anything.
The next morning with cops - SAFE

Driving away from the motel, perusing the prank further - Rusty nail talks about the broken tail light and all of a sudden they are UNSAFE

Excuse me if I missed something, but when did their prank turn from safe to unsafe? I cannot recollect a detail or a scene which reveals Lewis and Fuller to Rusty nail, unless he had links in the police force?

Does anybody have any opinions on how there harmless prank over the radio found them out?

I think they were unsafe when Rusty Nail arrives at the motel and kills that man. At this point, Rusty Nail has figured he has been pranked. He probably took cover at a vantage point from his truck where he could identify the prankers. He had been following them after that point, probably 80% certain that they were the prankers, it's only when they admitted it is where he reveals the tail light detail.
However I think when the older brother wouldn't apologise and was being disrespectful, is when they were 100% unsafe with no further way to redeem themselves.

Definitely at the hotel. Their car had the CB antenna, so for a truck driver that would be a glowing neon arrow pointing to it as the car of the prankers. It also wasn't too smart of them to admit that there was no Candy Cane, but by then he was already stalking them, so that wasn't the turning point.

They stopped being safe when Rusty Nail arrives at room 17 to find someone not named Candy Cane. At that point, Rusty likely realized that he got scammed. Thereafter, he likely began searching for the prankers; and he could find them because of the car's noticeable antenna, the radio's narrow five-mile radius, and the sparsely populated area.
