I agree, that the Venna character was quite unnecessary, but they had already shown her and introduced her in the movie as a friend of Lewis (the first scene is she and Lewis talking on the phone), and that's the entire reason Lewis was on the road trip in the first place...so he could pick her up from Colorado on his way home. Also, I completely disagree that Rusty Nail had accepted their apology and was going to leave them alone. It's clear that he was definitely still after them, otherwise, how would he know Venna had joined them if he wasn't still watching them? He definitely wasn't finished with them, and was only pretending to leave them alone because he's a psychopath, and that's part of the sick sadistic games he plays. That's how he got his kicks. He would make them think he was off their tail for a while, then come back as soon as they had started to relax and let their guard down. When he found out about Venna, it was just another person to torment for him, he would have kept tormenting the brothers whether she had come along or not. So if she hadn't been a character from the beginning, there would have been no reason to include her.
