At it's core, a film about race relations
disguised as a teen comedy
shareI just finished watching it and you are not wrong. It actually has a lot of things that dimwitted people would call woke today, yet it was made in 2000:
* strong black girls who refuse handouts from privileged white girls
* a bit of a crush between two gay guys
* all the stereotypical strong masculine white males are relegated to supporting roles, and a lot of them are portrayed unflatteringly
* the leads are strong, independent, opinionated girls who don't take shit from anyone
As a straight guy I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this movie was. I didn't feel it was preaching or pushing any agenda. It was just a fun, funny parody about cheer leading, and I suspect that the reason the movie worked so well is that Peyton Reed was the director. This movie is a gem, and I wish I had watched it years ago before identity politics became a thing.
