The Clovers call themselves classy?

First...

They stomp after Torrence and Missy as they're leaving their (the Clovers') show and hassle them about a tape.

Then one of them (who's wearing too much makeup) is all "Can we just beat them up now so I can go home? Come on I'm ready for this..."

Then Isis brings on derogatory remarks about Big Red being "the ugly redhead with a camera permanently attached to her face" and "You really don't think a white girl would think of that, do you?"

They go to the Toros football game and humiliate the squad as they're performing.

and then continue to blame Torrence and everyone else on her squad for Red stealing their routines even though Torrence has said over and over that she had no idea that their routines were not theirs to begin with.

She even goes as far as saying "You take our routines, put blonde hair on it, and call it original"- insinuating another semi-racist remark

After their first confrontation, Isis says "We're gonna let them go, because unlike them, we have class."

HAH! What they've demonstrated is anything but class.

I'm unsure what to think of this thread.

"Why Is It That You Are A Complete Douchbag And Waste Of My Air?" Frat House Massacre

reply

Well most of the things that were said were true. Why shouldn’t they try to get the tape of THEIR routine? They had every reason to try to give them a beat down. And with ugly red hair comment. I don’t see anything wrong with it. And as far as this comment "You take our routines, put blonde hair on it, and call it original". Well history has shown that whites have stolen from blacks and made billions off of their music, style, creativity etc. So I don't think that comment was far fetched either.

reply

Yes they had a reason to wanna give them a beat down, but the fact that they were ready and willing to and then said "Nah, we got class, we'll let them go" is hypocritical.

and I get that they were pissed that their routines were being copied and the credit given to the wrong people. The only right thing that they, the Clovers, did to correct their, the Toros, mistake was to make it to the nationals on their own with their own routines and earned the title.

but along the way, their words and actions were not saying "We're classy. We've been wronged but we're gonna make it right and forgive those who wronged us."

Instead, what they were doing was saying "We're gonna rub it in their faces that they screwed up, humiliate them, laugh at them, and not forgive them and move past this."

Only in the end were they getting along.

Anywhere you go, let me go too...that's all I ask of you

reply

Yes, but I’m sure you can understand their anger. I mean the routines that THEY worked hard choreographing were stolen every year. Got white washed and then won national competitions. Besides they humiliated them with THEIR routines that the Toros STOLE. Pretty fitting if you ask me.

reply

[deleted]

fitting, yes. I understand their anger.

Do I think it's fitting that they won the nationals? Yes. They deserved it more than the Toros who'd gotten their reputation based off a lie.

I'm merely remarking on the paradox that they called themselves classy and acted classless.

Hypocrites.

DAMN, its just a freaking movie!! Get over your damn self, babe.

Life is good I can't complain, I mean I could but no one's listening. =/

reply

Okay, first of all it's just a movie and wouldn't you be upset if someone was stealing all of your work that you worked so hard on? Of course you would!

reply

Cassie Mollie, if you think it's pointless to argue about this because it's just a movie, why are you here arguing about it with the rest of us? You seem to be falling on that argument because you have nothing else to say.

reply

I have no problem at all with black people, but I didn't like the angle: the evil white cheer-leading squad steals cheers from the poor inner-city squad (who end up winning the championship even though the Toros had the better routine).

I was just waiting for someone to bring this up. It's not IMDB unless someone does.

Why not like the angle? Just because they were showing a white girl in a bad light? Boo freakin hoo it happens. It wasn't like the movie made all the Clover's so sweet and innocent, while all of the Toro's were mean bitches (except Big Red, Courtney and the asian girl). I didn't see any "consirpacy" where the black girls looked better than the white ones. In fact the movie made you sympathize with the Toros squad more than the other.

reply

Hah, not just the IMDB, this applies to everywhere.

"I'm not racist." (Black people are presented in a positive light, or even just represented at all). "Ugh, reverse racism!"

"And I guess he won the argument, but I walked away with the turnips."

reply

Yup, exactly. You know as soon as you see "I don't have a problem with black people, but..."

reply

How about because it's extremely common and seen as perfectly acceptable to have the catty, mean characters white? Or the heroes poor but deserving blacks (which is kind of condescending honestly)? Especially blondes. Why do people feel the need to demonize blonde white women?

I love how if this movie the other way around, you same people would probably scream about it.

A white girl is portrayed as a shallow/dumb b*tch: Socially acceptable.
A black girl is portrayed as a shallow/dumb b*tch: HATEFUL RACISM!!!1!!!!

Ah, good old politically correct double standards.

You are unfathomably ignorant ranting about reverse-racism Cheedo. You clearly have no understanding whatsoever of race relations in US history.

reply

Here's how I understood it. The other girls on the squad demonstrated little class but the captain however did. I took her comment, "we have class," was her taking a leadership role and trying to calm the other girls down by saying, "yes, you're angry, but if we beat them up then we're no better than them." She was just trying to remind them that sometimes it shows more class to just walk away and let your actions do the talking.

Apparently the point from before just went right over your head.

Toros (actually "Big Red") stole routines from the Clovers=Not Classy AT ALL
Clovers make threats of beating them=Not Classy, but I would do that too if my routines were stolen from.
The Clover's leader, Isis, walks away from the situation, making the other girls do so, too=That, in itself, was classy.

reply

Apparently yours too.

The Toros did not steal the routines and Torrance and Missy did nothing to warrant those racist attacks and threats of physical violence. So you would be a racist and a violent thug because a cheerleader stole your routines? Ok I see why you'd think the Clovers are classy then.

reply

its because THEY came up with the original cheers not the toros and wearing heeps of make up was like the styles back then .

OMG back then makes me feel old im only thirteen [calms down ; im ok im ok]

reply

Yeah I agree with you; the Clovers had major attitude problems, especially after it was clear that Torrance wasn't responsible for stealing their routines. I thought the worst part was when Isis tore up the check that Torrance gave her. I would've sucker-punched her right then and there if that'd been me.

reply

And the Clovers were dumb enough to think Torrence and Missy were filming them. Um, did they not notice that that Missy and Torrence did not have a camera? Or did they think there was a hidden camera somewhere?

reply

yes they thought it was hidden. still they were obviously looking for a fight even though isis later said their classier so they werent gonna fight them. a lil hypocritical if you ask me... if they were really classy they wouldnt have acted like they were gonna beat them up @ all..

reply

Well the term "classy" is actually subjective. So the Clovers could have actually thought their actions were classy.

Some definitions of classy that I found:

1: having or reflecting high STANDARDS of personal behavior
2: admirably skillful and graceful

Everyone's standards are different. So I don't think they were being hypocrites. I think they actually thought they were classy. The Toros were very fortunate that Isis was the captain. Go to East Compton steal their cheers and see what you get.

reply

they were fortunate some captain wanted to beat them up then changed her mind ta the last minute? how do you figure? isis was a b-word, looking for a fight then backed out at the last minute to pretends its cuz she is "classy" i almost have to wonder if she started to be uncertain the winning squad- even tho there were only 2 of them- would lose

Generally when someone refers to themselves as classy, it means they're not.

This thread is laced with a lot of white privilege and stupidity. Don't let the inner city black girls be upset that their style, parts of their culture, and their routines was ripped off. Don't let the "pretty blond/Red white girls" be portrayed in a negative. "Hey Torrance didn't know Big Red was stealing Isis' squad moves. So those mean black gurls should at least be kind to her."

-_- Ya'll can kick rocks!!

The very fact that Big Red was willing to travel miles out of the way and blatantly rip off and appropiate inner city (read:black) routines for herself is "racist" when you get down to it. Isis was right, there is no way a white girl could come up with the moves they were doing. And thats not racist or that foolish term white folks invented, "reverse racism", thats merely fact.

Black ppl have rhythm. It is innate. Its something that most white ppl (not all but most) lack. Big Red knew that by stealing The Clovers moves her squad would win because The CLovers had original moves. But most of the comments I'm reading shows the writers of them clearly ignore that angle.

I'm sure some of yo will read this post and try your best to "read" me or "put me in my place" with your "colorblind" witticism and try to call me a racist and blah blah effin' blah. But your responses and the way they're presented shows white privilege and ignorance at play. Have a seat

Of the Toros: only Big Red, Courteney, and Whitney were classless. All the other members HAD CLASS.

Of the Clovers: all of the girls were CLASSLESS.

That's like saying only White people can swim. It's those kinds of statements that have the potential to start race wars.

What about the musical Rodgers' and Hammerstein's Cinderella with Whitney Houston and Brandy in the lead? It's a traditionally White musical with two Black women in the lead? The singing is no longer classical but R&B. Would you consider that stealing from White culture, too?

And the fact remains that neither Torrance nor Missy were responsible for what happened. They had no evidence on them and were humble, even apologetic to the Clovers. Missy (a White girl) was, in fact, the FIRST to call the Toros out on it. The fact that those Clovers saw two humble White girls with no incriminating evidence, and IMMEDIATELY suspected them of stealing, and then threatened to kick their asses, smacks of both racism AND classless behavior.

In the news recently, there was a story about a White boy who got beat up on a school bus that got beaten up by 5 Black boys for no reason. The Black bus driver did nothing about it. What if the White boy's friends and relatives went to the Black boys' neighborhood and started beating everyone up in retaliation? That's equivalent to what the Clovers were about to do to Missy and Torrance. And by the way, I'M NOT WHITE.

reply

Thank you.

This thread reeks of "black privilege" and anti-white racism because the racist SJWs on imdb can't stand having their racist crap called out when they're so used to society supporting it. And appropriation... don't make me laugh, especially if you're wearing jeans, eating pizza, using air conditioning, practicing ballet, own a cell phone, and tons more, because white people created a good deal of the everyday stuff you use or do.

But that's all racist to say :(
