some of the really meaningful and entertaining parts are meant as muted social commentary...it's a nostalgic feel-good movie, that's true, but that doesn't mean it has nothing to offer....you just have to look beyond what the characters say...themes aren't always blurted out like that.
for example, the communist, *welder* son-of-a-banker thought that dishes were burgeoise, but the proletariat *welder* was cleaning them nonchalantly at the end...and then there's the fact that they don't allow coca-cola because its a capitalist i-can't-remember-what, but two seconds afterwards you see a flash of a brand name beer. that sort of stuff will probably make watching this film a lot more enjoyable. that and the dynamics between the characters.
