what happened on the plane pre-cigarette?
So Don's on the plane, awaiting takeoff, and he lights up a cigarette - but why?
Three possible explanations:-
1) - he just fancied a cigarette and inspite of (or maybe because of) all the rumpus this would cause he lit one up.
2) - he was actually sexually assaulted, as he claimed whilst under arrest at the airport, and lit up to lower the stress
3) - he was sexually assaulted by the cabin crew, but only in his own paranoid imagination
the third possibility is intriguing. Seeing Don as someone obsessed by homosexual paranoia maybe goes a long way to explain his violent and erratic behaviour. Evidence for his paranoia/sexual paranoia may be seen in the Don's lines - "why is that goat looking at me?" and "that boy's looking at me!".
The strong impression Deedee's action had on Don during their sexual encounter could also be relevant.
