Ways Gal could have gotten out of it.....

OK I was just watching this movie again. Gal now lives in Spain, far away from his old criminal gang. Why couldn't he have faked an injury to get out of it? I can understand him not wanting to be away when Don showed up because with Don's persistence he probably would have showed up another time. I'm thinking if he had just walked around slowly and painfully with a cane or walker he probably would have been left alone.

Besides, and I've seen this argument here before, why exactly does Don need Gal for this job anyways? There was like a dozen guys working on this using pneumatic drills. That doesn't require too much expertise. Instead of 12 just use 11 guys! It probably would have been done OK.....

Gal is a good choice for the heist, as he is experienced and trustworthy (he did a stretch and is not a rat). But Don's main reason for making Gal a part of the team is that he wants to see Jackie. He tells Gal that they were together once and that he "quite liked her." He later rebukes himself in the mirror for this admission of feelings. He goes to Spain to see Jackie. Gal being asked to take part in the heist is simply Don's way of covering his true reason for the visit. Gal realizes this and calls Don on it. Don's angry outburst confirms that Gal is right.

9/11 would have gotten Gal out of it. If this had taken place two or three years later - after the 9/11 tragedy - Don would've been given at least a couple of weeks' custodial for his outburst on the plane about the bomb and smoking. Don may have been extradited, saving Gal having to do the job and savng Don's own life. Don may have returned though...

He never says anything about a bomb. He just smoked and said "I hope this plane crashes". And being in Spain and NOT the US or on a US owned flight nothing would of happened.

He couldn't get out of it as Don was mental so would of knocked him off in the end.

Don told Teddy he would get Gal and he is going to get Gal. There are no two ways about it.

12 instead of 11? Missed the part about "Preparation, preparation, preparation." Don is the guy in putting the team together and he isn't one to say "No" to.

Gal had to go. It was in the script.

That's actually a great point. But given Gal's obvious fear and reluctance, I bet he'd be willing to go one further and actually injure himself, like deliberately breaking his own leg severely and putting himself out of action for months, meaning he definitely couldn't do the job.
