Very impressed by this film--very caught-up in it, but I never would have thought twice about even seeing the trailer based on the stupid title. I saw it only because I have a crush on Amanda Redman, and when I searched for movies that she was in I found this with Gandhi--I MEAN BEN KINGSLEY, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in this foreign film.
it's got the word sex in it. as far as getting people's attention from a glance i'd go as far as calling it a genius title if it wasn't just plain common sense.
Yep, lame title for sure. It took me 13 years to finally decide to watch it simply because of the stupid title. It's this film that made me realize just how much a title can make or break a film's chances for a wide audience.
finally decide to watch it simply because of the stupid title.
Personally I find it stupid that people will or will not watch a film purely based on the title...make no sense. Does it really matter what the title of the film is, is it not the film itself you should be concerned with.
There is a famous phrase that fits... Don't judge a book by it's cover.
And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best. Sony 16:9 reply share
Well, with all the movies there are, what do you do--read up on all of them? You're saying a person shouldn't judge by name only. Well I didn't, but the title of this flick is no clue as to the quality of it.
Just to let you know, Trainspotting is not about anorak wearing people with notebooks, Layer Cake is not about cooking and Snatch is certainly not about female genitalia!
@msklar-2 It's a stupid title, that's for sure. It should've been something that references Don's efforts to convince Gal to do the job, seeing as that's the main theme of the film. Something like "Hard Sell" or "The Persuader."
I actually do think it's referencing him and Gal is the 'Sexy Beast' in question.
Moreover, a lot of non-British people would not know that 'Sexy Beast' is an endearing and ironic nickname you give to someone, even when they're way past their prime and there's a line in the film the echoes this as Aitch and Gal are getting ready to go out.
I think it's a great title, original, enigmatic and very British.
Some people need to have the whole film described to them in the title, so for those morons, how about...
'Psychotic Gangster Tries to Get Retired Ex-con Out of Retirement For One Last Job, but is Such a *beep* that He Gets Deservedly Murdered and the People that Killed Him Get Away With It, but Nearly Didn't.'
or
PGTTGREOORFOLJBISACHGDMATPTKHFAWIBND for short.
PGTTGREOORFOLJBISACHGDMATPTKHFAWIBND 2 is probably going to be amazing when it comes out.
Seriously and in closing, 'Sexy Beast' is THE best possible title and it's a perfect fit.
'The Persuader' a) already exists and is b) probably the most laughable thing I've seen on a message board for a while.
The sexy beast could be Gal, it could be the gangster lifestyle or the money. I personally think it refers to the lifestyle. It is difficult to give up and may well destroy you in the end. At the end Don is buried alongside the sexy beast rabbit - Gal has managed to bury his past (for now) alongside Don (the real life embodiment of that life). My take on it anyway. As for being a suitable title, I have no problem with it.
