can you name a wider range?

ok folks, i challenge each and every one of you...

name the actor and the two roles that are a more extreme opposite than that of Ben Kingsley's performance in Sexy Beast compared to his role in Gandhi.

this post may have no replies because this is tough to beat...

Philip Seymour Hoffman always impresses me-from Magnolia to The Talented Mr. Ripley, from Boogie Nights to Hard Eight, Flawless, The 25th Hour etc...

reply

Another Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man / Hook

reply

Everyone seems to have overlooked Edward Norton : from weedy wuss in Fight Club (and others) to bad-ass-scary-as-all-hell-neo-nazi in American History X.

reply

How about Billy Bob Thornton 'U-Turn' to 'A Simple Plan' to 'Bad Santa'

jmscdonnell - You have the gaul to say De Niro and Nicholson play the same role in every film, you make me laugh! I think we have to have a little argument and let me educate you in the ways of acting my very confused little man. Heres a couple of good ones:

De Niro: Awakenings - Raging Bull

Nicholson: As Good As It Gets - Batman

Pacino: Scarface - Scent Of A Woman

Hoffman: Rain Man - Midnight Cowboy

Depp: Edward Scissorhands - Donnie Brasco

They are my top 5 actors so I'm proving a point why. You can never put any of them 5 down so I will look forward to an argument if you wish so.

Last Film View:
Eureka - 7/10 Good last third but the rest seems weak.

Gary Oldman:

Sid & Nancy....Immortal Beloved
Chattahoochee....Rosencrantz & Guildenstern
State of Grace....The Scarlet Letter
JFK.....True Romance
Leon......The Contender

to name but a few.

But I agree, Ben Kingsley's range between Ghandi, Schindler's List, and Sexy Beast is astounding.

Can't believe Day-Lewis hasn't got more mentions.

Christy Brown in "My Left Foot" to Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York" is a pretty huge range

"I will never... play... the Dane."

reply

I'd have to say Gary Oldman may have him beat but another one is

Leonardo Dicaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and in The Departed. I believe those are very contrasting roles; from playing a mentally challenged person to a tough as nails gangster/UC cop.

reply

I think i'll go for Keanu Reeves,

Bill and Ted's excellent adventure <-> The Matrix.

LOL..Dude you gotta be kidding?

I don't think Kingsley can be matched for this, but a close second would have to be Dustin Hoffman in two of his first starring roles (in what just so happen to be my favourite two movies of all time): as Benjamin Braddock in "The Graduate" and, less than two years later, as 'Ratso' Rizzo, in Midnight Cowboy. Now that's what I call an achievement.

reply

Don't think anyone could actually beat him, but Gary Oldman had a good comparison from The Fifth Element to the Firm. They were both evil characters, but so varied you wouldn't think they were the same person.

Dustin Hoffman, Ben Braddock (The Graduate) to Ratso Rizzo (Midnight Cowboy) or Rainman to Tootsie or Little Big Man to Lenny or All the President's Men to Papillon. Your example of Kingsley's range is well founded. Hoffman has the same fearlessness.

Jack Nicholson...."The Departed" to "About Schmidt"

Javier Bardem...."No Country for Old Men" to "Before Night Falls"

Edward Norton

American History X <---> Keeping The Faith

Adrian Brody

Son of Sam <--->The Pianist

Javier Bardem as the Cuban poet in "Before Night Falls"
Javier Bardem as the "Friendo" in No Country for Old Men

It makes you wonder if these amazing actors don't have a bit of bi-polar in their genes...

So far the thread has been about male actors. I think some of the wider range of character actors might be provided by the girls !!!

1. Glenn Close ---from her Alex Forrest ( Fatal Attraction) to he Cruella De Ville ( 1001 Dalmations) to her Dr. Elaine Keener ( Things You Can Tell Just by Lokking at Her)

2. Charlize Theron .... from her Sara Deever ( Sweet November) to her Aileen Wournos (Monster). Now thers's a range !

3. Cate Blanchette ... from roles as Queen Elizabeth 1(Elizabeth & The Golden Age) to her Bob Dylan (I'm Not There) to her Katherine Hepburn (Aviator) to her Galadriel ( Lord of the Rings). A truly diverse range of performances.

Sorry if this is redundant folks, I didn't have time to read every post.

Gary Oldman: Sid Viscous to Beethoven.

Frank Lee Deere. I don't give a damn.

I always go for Bilbo Baggins and the android in Aliens...I forget the name of the actor but he's great. Another good one is Aragorn and the guy in the wheelchair in Carlitos Way...same guy.
