Some of you will remember that I have an extraordinary visual sense
*beep* me! I just asked someone exactly the same question today.
When you consider how people like Jack Nicholson and Robert DeNiro have played themselves in so many films, it's impressive to see someone like Kingsley display a convincing Gandhi and Gangster.
What's impressive about Kingsley's role is that Gandhi is probably closer to Ben Kingsley character than this. I've seen him in interviews etc. He seems like a quiet, well spoken man - he did such a brilliant job in Sexy Beast!!
Nobody's Christ/anti-Christ is likely to beat Kingsley's Gandhi/anti-Gandhi anytime soon.

I think this question is part of a larger one which is "what's the difference between a movie star and an actor". Most of these posts are pretty much on target. William Dafoe is one of the greatest actors of his generation. You need only watch Platoon or Missippi Burning and compare it to his character in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Then compare those to any real life interviews you've seen him do. The man's completely different everytime you see him.
Al Pacino in Two for the Money vs People I know (obviously not his best films, but character wise you can really see the difference)
Same goes for Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley. They are all very good. Kingsley especially though, I've never seen him in a role I didn't love. I haven't liked all his movies but he has a way of bringing out the best in an otherwise bad film. I thought his character in A Sound of Thunder was excellent even though the movie overall was a bad stinker.
As far as this film goes, I'm mixed. Kingsley was definitely incredible in this and his character in my opinion makes it worth watching. The other characters weren't necessarily bad I just feel the film had a very minimal storyline. The airplane scene was the best.
While I like Brad Pitt and Robert Redford (whom I think are equals) they definitely border more towards the movie star definition. I've liked many of their films and Robert Redford especially is a good producer/director. However I don't know that their acting consists of a range as large as the previously mentioned greats. Though I say if you're better than Tom Cruise (the ultimate movie star) you're ahead of the game already. God that guy sucks.

Not that it matters much but my opinion on all the actors mentioned:
Michael Keaton - He's up there with Brad Pitt and Robert Redford as being a "good" movie star but unforunately thats what he is, a movie star. I do like him a lot though.
Christian Bale - I don't think he's done enough to really make that kind of judgement, though I like the handful of movies I've seen him in.
Vincent D'onofrio - definitely an an actor but he's more of a character or supporting actor. He hasn't made it big yet. He is good though.
"Kingsley still has one of the biggest ranges though" .....yep :) The only recent critisism I can give is ....I'd rather have seen him portray a character in The Sopranos as opposed to himself.
Gary Oldman - Truely excellent. It pisses me off that he doesn't get big parts anymore. Robert Downey Jr is another one in this category...they are great actors...they've proved they've had box office appeal...why aren't they doing serious stuff? God damn hollywood *beep*
John Travolta - I respect his growth over the years, he's gotten better...he's not great but he's better than the average. The fact that he's mixed up in that scientology cult makes me biased however in terms of pure acting I just don't think he belongs in the great category even though he's improved.
Owen Wilson - definitely a movie star. Maybe he tries, and his comedy movies are okay for what they are, but he does not belong anywhere in this conversation.
Jeff Bridges - He's good. I respect him as an actor but I don't think he's amazing. I do like him though.
Jim Carrey - extremely diverse and talented. He deserves credit for being able to perform an offering in any genre. He's obviously most suited for comedy...I don't think he's a great actor but I like the non-comedy he's done and I put him basically in the same category as Robin Williams. Very talented.
Leonardo Di Caprio - Kind of in a class all by his own. I wouldn't say he's an extremely talented actor but he makes up for that in his choice of scripts. Most of the movies he's done have had a unique storyline. He's not bad thats for sure.
Kevin Bacon - He's alright. Nothing special.
George Clooney - I liked him in From Dusk till Dawn. I thought he did a good job directing Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. (awesome title) I'd say he's better as a director moreso than an actor. He's definitely a movie star and I thought syriana kinda sucked.
Ralph Finese is an actor.
Robin Williams is extremely diverse and talented and has come a ways as an actor.
Recently I'd haveto say I always liked Johnny Depp...but seeing him in the Libertine made me realize how much of a truely remarkable actor he is. In my opinion he's one of the greatest in the last 20 years. I love Mickey Rourke as welll...he's HIGHLY underrated.
