The problem for me is Don

Kingsley did a fine job and everything but:

1 - he's just not intimidating. He's funny and off-putting, and socially inept, and completely bonkers, but he's not scary.
2 - a guy that out of control would never be trusted with any responsibility such as organizing a heist for the powers that be. He might be used as some kind of enforcer/hitman, but not to organize anything. He's way too unstable.

So I just didn't find his character believable. That everyone is so afraid of him might be explained because of his connections, but again, why would he have any when he's a raving loon?

His past probably speaks louder than his mouth. He had a reputation for being successful at what he does and was handed the job again. I didn't see him being the mastermind or ringleader though. I liked him, even his very last words he said "I fkkd so and so" can't remember her name. Lol. And he peed next to the guys toilet just to be a jerk.. lol. Must say that's a good one I've carried over into real life practice w people I don't like . Ahahha

You touch on the exact issues I had with this performance, although I don't know if I'd call it a "fine job" unless comedy was the goal. His entire performance felt like he thought he was in a comedy while literally everyone else was playing straight crime/heist/drama. I saw these years ago & couldn't help but think to myself during every scene he was in, why would anyone feel intimidated by this eccentric, old clown? And more importantly, as you touch on, why would any serious crime organization give him the kind of responsibility that requires basic people skills? It's ironic that Kingsley's performance is what's most remembered about this film when I didn't really feel engaged by it until the character was killed off.
