Scatman Crothers/ musician/ nursing home or retirement home

I'm looking for one I thought was an After school special, but didn't see it listed. It starred Scatman Crothers. He was living in a retirement home, or possibly a nursing home. A teenager or young adult helps out at the home. I can't remember if she volunteered or was ordered to for some reason or another. She became good friends with Scatman's character, and I believe he taught her how to play a musical instrument, but she may have already known how to play it, but can't remember all of the details. Some of the other residents also play a musical instrument, and they form a band and travel, much to the horror of the people who run the home and try to stop them. I remember Scatman's character dies in the end.
