Why did this show not do better in the ratings?

Living in the UK (where the show got very little advertising) I have always wondered why the show did not do better in the ratings in the US. I know the very first episode got over 6 million viewers but why did the show struggle after that? The show was on the WB, which was a very popular network for teenagers. Shows on the WB like Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill all found an audience.

Roswell was critically acclaimed and combined all the best elements of X-Files, Buffy and Dawson's Creek all rolled into one amazing show. I know that during season 3 the show was up against season 1 of Smallville and 24, which hit the show hard in the ratings. However,I just dont get how season 1 & 2 did not do better. Have any US fans who watched the original broadcast got any theories as to why the show was not as popular as the other shows I have mentioned?

I didn't watch the series when it originally aired. The network was fairly new, and in my neck of the woods their channel did not come in very well. On good days it was grainy, on lukewarm days it was snowy, and on bad days it could barely be seen, if at all. Plus, the show first aired across from 'Ally McBeal.'

I'm a late-to-the-party fan.
