Finally watched this show

So since ditching cable a few years back i've gradually been making my way through all the shows i wanted to watch but missed the first time around.

I caught parts of Roswell way back when but never really enough to follow it, but it was always one of those shows that would come up from time to time, and i've alralways wwanted to watch from the beginning. I found a good deal for the dvd set and figured why not?

Overall, I found it disappointing. Season 1 was good. It was pretty much what i expected. It flowed well and kept me wanting to keep watching.

To me season 2 just went off the deep end. It was too obvious they were being mandated probably to change things up. I actually would have loved a more scifi focused show but this one just seemed to be all over the place. I didn't find many of the episodes particularly coherent with the world introduced in s1. There attempt to develop a deeper mythology just didn't work the way a show like Buffy did so brilliantly.

So we come to season 3 and once again they decide they'll just flip the whole tone of the show once again. I liked it much better than s2. In fact s3 is more what s2 should have been. But again it was just clear they were never able to decide what kind of show to make so they just kept changing it. If by season 3 of any show a consistent tone hasn't been established it is time to hang it up.

So overall i would say good them bad then Ok was how this show flowed to me. It's a shame because i think it would have been great if they weren't constantly changing it. I'm sure that was mostly to do with studio interference which usually never works out. I can understand why people love it. I might have if i watched it as it airs, but bingewatching this show just makes the struggle to develop a consistent show way too apparent.

Agree with you about the seasons. I hated season 2 and 3 with the exception of a few really great episodes. It just never felt like the Roswell I fell in love with in season one.

I’m Liz Parker and five days ago I died. But then the really amazing thing happened. I came to life.

Once they got past the first season, it always felt like there were too many people making plot decisions without anyone having a clear vision of where the show was going. That said, there were still good episodes in seasons 2 & 3 but it wasn't consistent.

I absolutely loved Season 1. But Season 2 & 3 were horrible..with the exception of maybe 2 or 3 episodes..I was so disappointed. How could the 1st season be so great and then it be completely off track by next season. The whole dynamic was different and I really hated the character Tess. She sort of ruined the show for me.

Don't quote me on this, because it's been so long since articles were written about this series for behind the scenes.

I think what happened as to why some feel like you do with the overall flow of seasons 2 and 3 was due because the people making the show had to change some of the drama happening in the show all while still trying to tell the story they wanted to (if that makes sense) in reaction to losing viewers. The WB cancelled Roswell after S2 and was picked up by UPN because of the fans dedication to showing their support. It was once again cancelled during its third season but was given the opportunity to finish the series, only with less episodes.

To me season 2 just went off the deep end. It was too obvious they were being mandated probably to change things up

Yep... basically the changes you are talking about were done because the production company was telling them to make a change to gain more viewers or they're getting axed.

I can't remember what some of their original plans were for the storyline, but I wish I did. The only thing I can remember was I don't think Alex wasn't originally suppose to die and he only did because Colin Hanks wanted to leave the show for a movie career.
Sorry for the spoiler tag, but I did that just in case others stumble on this thread before watching the series, even though it's been off the air for a long time and on Netflix.
