Hi,
I presume, like me, you saw the original screening. I remember as the show went on I increasingly realised it was a wind-up. However it was extremally well done.
People who never saw the original, will I think wonder what all the fuss was about.
Having seen the DVD, which has a good commentary from the director which gives plenty a information about the production of the programme, I can assure you it still retains it's power to scare.
I'm sure that if you show the programme to people who haven't seen it, haven't heard of it, and re-create the original "live" feel, it will still be scary.
I would warn however, that even now,in my view, the programme is NOT suitable for young children.

I have been campaigning for the release of the DVD for a few years now and finally have a copy. have just finished watching it, and I can't believe how well I've remembered it all. Even spotted the 'ghost' Pipes in some of the footage that I must have missed the first time round. Actually shows Sarah Greene (What did happen to her career?) to be a great actress.
Now that I am alot older now, I can see the flaws in some of the acting, the kids aren't up to much and appear quite false, but that said I'll watch again and again. It is also a little disheartining, as a believer in the supernatural just how good some of the effects are.

Eaten by cats on Hallowe'en night 1992.
I've seen her name pop up as producer on a few daytime things on BBC1.

I'm getting my copy tomorrow. To say it was over 10 years ago, and I was 13 at the time, I remember a lot about it. And even though I knew (afterwards, I fell for it initially) it was fake, EVERY time the central heating fired up and started knocking, I was shaking....... That must be a sign of an extremely well made 'documentary'.
shareI ordered it last night so should get it on Saturday. I have read all about it in 2 issues of Fortean Times and remember a lot about the original screening.
Can't wait to see it again.
I knew it was a wind-up as soon as I saw the woman playing the mother. I had seen her 2 or 3 days earlier in Excalibur.
Country don't mean dumb
Hi,
I have finally managed to watch this again on the DVD release. And to finally be able to sit there and watch it without it scaring the crap out of me.
I remember watching this when I was 11 in the living room with no lights on just the tv, and was I scared, to be honest it scared the living daylights out of me I was even too scared to turn the light on for the fear of something getting me on the way.
The one thing that I remember the most which gave me nightmares for weeks after was the dreaded noise of those cats howling, proberably the reason why I dont like cats to day.
I'm glad they finally released it. as me and my friend can actually watch it now, and to be honest we do find it humorous not only by the acting but at the way in which we believed it was true even when we found out it was all a setup months if not years after we had seen it.
One thing I would say is if you do decide to buy this remember to have someone there with you when you watch it. Just remember DO NOT! turn off the lights.
Well I was eating a cheese and pickle sandwich.....and. i put it on the table .............. and it just FLEWWWW of the table.
