Ahead of its time.
I watched it with a girlfriend at the age of 22. She was so scared, we had to switch the TV off after the little girl gets scratched. It was the 1st Blair Witch / Pa activity type of movie.

It does seem to be ahead of its time. It's the first ghost-themed found footage movie I'm aware of. Although the first known found footage film was Cannibal Holocaust and as far as I can tell, the first paranormal found footage movie was 1988's Alien Abduction.
Certainly this is a classic example of the genre, highly recommended above The Last Broadcast, Grave Encounters or The Feed; films that followed with the concept of a paranormal TV show doing a live broadcast.
Does deserve more attention/credit as a found footage/mockumentary style horror movie.
As with many things, The Blair Witch Project being the box office success in the USA is what hogs all the attention. So many are under the impression it was the first found footage/mockumentary movie.
