Scariest moment?

What was the scariest moment in this excellent show for you?
Mine was either the ending (sure it was fake, but Parky saying those lines with the chilling realization that he could be, or is, possessed by Pipes, will haunt me forever) or the shadow in the corner of the studio (scared the heebie jeebies OUT of me!)
Any favorites?

When I watched it first time round it was the girl getting covered in scrathes and then talking in that voice.

Seen it twice recently and the only thing to make me jump was Craig Charles jumping out of the cupboard!

The moments when we saw Pipes. Not the obvious ones, like seeing him in the bedroom, or the quick glimpse from the "Gloryhole", but the reflection in the window in the kitchen and seeing him standing behind the man who tried to exorcise him. You can hear a noise at that point as well, and it's frightening as hell.

I think that the scariest moments are:

-The older sister talking in tongues (hair-raising even thinking about it)
-The first time you hear the cats crying
-Simple things like cutting to the younger sister sat alone in the dark bedroom
-The part where Parkinson airs footage of a woman relating her scary story, which abruptly breaks down (scared the living hell out of me as a kid, and I've always hated that sound effect ever since)

Mines has to be, when that little girl gets thrown across her bed room. that scared me

When the social worker calls in, and reveals that he was Pipes social worker, and Parky loks directly at the camera...we all think the same!

When they realise in the studio that what they're watching isn't the live feed anymore & the link suddenly dies to the sound of a demonic shriek (or at least that's what it sounded like at the time). That scared the hell out of me at the time.

As mark_dunne27-1 said, the bit when the "live feed" breaks down with a horrible screaming noise -- still scares me now! But what's that thing which appears on screen at that moment? It looks like E.T.'s arm coming through a door... is it a bit of footage from earlier in the show, or something else? (It's one of the things that isn't in the script)

The man's story about saliva appearing on his food is quietly scary, especially as apparently it's true.

The scariest part for me (bear in mind that I watched this when it was originally broadcast on BBC1 in 1992, and had NO IDEA it was a drama) was near the end. When the house is erupting into chaos, the children run downstairs, and the cameraman pans around their room, revealing briefly the figure of Pipes in highlight against the curtains. It then quickly panned back and there was nothing there at all.

It might not sound much, but after a tense first hour of the show, as well as the speed of it, and the noise in the house, it was a perfect horror moment.

I recently got the DVD, and I was shocked by how many times Pipes appears in the background throughout, if you look carefully. Chilling, even as I now watch it as a 30 year old man; I still get the edge of unease about it.

Call me stupid, but I thought the scariest thing was the lamp rising off the table and exploding during the footage of the girls in their bedroom.

I agree about the moment with the curtains. I jumped out of my skin ! To be honest I was 13 when I first saw this and I was terrified but I really did not think it would scare me again all these years later. I bought the DVD to try and remind myself why the show caused such a fuss and never dreamed it would still terrify me.

The scariest part for me has to be when the girl is talking in a different voice behind the sofa, and starts saying nursery rhymes. (It sends a real chill down my spine!!)

The part where the cameraman looks over the curtain and Pipes is there, but when he looks back, he's gone. Also the part where it shows Pipes standing near the curtains when the girls were sleeping.

reply

Wow...how do you guys even remember all this....The scariest moment for me is also what i can quite vividly remember after 15 years...It was the glimpse of Pipes near a curtain or something....because the setting looked so much like my living room....

i remember watching the program when i was 9 and it scared the living daylights out of me, i never saw it again until last year when my friend got me the the dvd. the first thing that struck me was the acting and how the hell i ever believed this story was real. The weird thing was although the acting left a lot to be desired and it was quite obviously fake it scared me possibly more then when i first saw it!

I cant pick just one scary moment but to me the whole "mother sevens" thing is scary, when that woman calls in and tells the story about mother sevens living on that site and pipes being posessed by her.
The other scary bit is where pipes keeps on appearing everywhere, espicially in the bedroom when the girls are sleeping.
Another is the bloody cat noises coming from under the stairs, gives me the chills every time!
Micheals voice at the end, im not quite sure what he says though
When everything is in chaos and the cupbpard door swings open and you can see the figure of pipes, shudder...

Whats scary about this program is that fact that its set in a normal council house on a normal road, very much like where you and i might live

reply

The part where you see Pipes in the window reflection in the kitchen.

The other scary part was the fact that my partner (43) still thought it was all real even after the credits rolled (including cast list) - that was only last year!

reply

Calindreams that's you got me laughing at 9am, which is also scary.
