Surprisingly Close Adaptation...

...Well, for most of the running time, and subject to some odd changes.

In this version they use handfuls of garlic a lot as crucifixes and the host are clearly not appropriate and invoking Allah or brandishing a Koran may have been considered some sort of sacrilege... Although in ordinary conversation throughout the film people do say inshallah or something along the lines of Allah grant you pleasant sleep... Anyway, while the story follows the novel, more or less, till the end, it lacks much conviction and is rarely even remotely effective. It doesn't help that the copy I saw was pretty rough, like a bad VHS rip and the sound was often poorly synched which looks like bad dubbing in the original.

Dracula, doesn't look great bald with the protruding fangs but the actor could be worse. In fact most of the actors are acceptable, with the worst dialog being quite possibly a case of badly translated subtitles... Dracula is said to have been a medieval character known as "the poker"... and destroying vampires involves "poking" their heart. So, you can generally get the meaning if you can avoid laughing.

Finally, at the end rather than an ocean voyage and trains to Transylvania, there is a foot chase in Istanbul, apparently because, having lost his cape in a scuffle, Dracula is no longer able to pop in and out or become a bat.
