In the season 3 episode "Hartsfield's Landing", the President says that line to Sam Seaborn.
It's been 17 years since West Wing started, and 12 years since Sam Seaborn left to become a Congressman. Aaron Sorkin should do a new "west wing"-type show, with Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) as President. Do the new era. Because so much has changed since the era of West Wing.
In fairness, it's eventually established Sam lost that election for Congressman. By 2006, Sam was just starting as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Santos administration. More of a stretch to imagine he'd be a big enough player to run for President ten years later. Though I assume you could make up whatever.
Still, my thing with bringing back The West Wing in any shape or form has always been this - would I watch it? Sure. Should it happen? Probably not.
It's not really "bringing back West Wing" in that sense. Like a cheap reboot or something. It would just be the next Aaron Sorkin project, and yes, be about the White House again. Put it on premium cable (or streaming) so it can be a bit edgier, but god, don't lose the raw intelligence and hope of the original.
We already seen a West Wing series through the eyes of the democrats, the only way it would make sense to run a sequel series is to have it seen through the eyes of the GOP. It's the only way I would watch a sequel series.
I am a liberal who almost always votes Democrat but I too would like to see a quality show like TWW presented through the eyes of the Republicans. It would be interesting to see the conflicts not just between the GOP and the Democrats but between the traditionalists and the Tea Party radicals.
