Among the best episodes of the entire series was the one where CJ goes home for her high school reunion and stays with her dad, played by Donald Moffatt ("The Long Goodbye" - ep4.13). His back-and-forth between reality and confusion was a performance that was both amazing and heartbreaking. He wasn't nominated for it, but of the guest stars on the program, I'd put him at or near the top.
I agree that he did great with his role, I just didn't like that episode at all. When I rewatch the show I tend to skip that one. The topic of Alzheimers/dementia deserves to be talked about, but the style and feel of the episode was so different from any other episode before it, that it felt off for me. It seemed to me that the episode served as an experiment, and to me, one that came out bad. Maybe because of the absolute lack of political context, which we saw could be implemented earlier in the series with autism in the Stackhouse filibuster.
I agree. If they wanted to show the more human side of it, than do it with someone who's more involved in the world of West Wing, like an elderly member of Congress, or someone who's a big deal in DNC leadership.
