Great antidote to the horrific events of election day??

My 25-year old son just found this series on Netflix. When he asked if I had watched it, I explained that I came very late to the game (probably the last season) and "back in the day" you couldn't just stream any series you wanted at any time!

But at his suggestion, I'm now watching it from the beginning.

Honestly, it gives me a nice comforting feeling. I'm personally horrified about the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. It actually hurts my stomach...and my heart. So every weekend I binge a little, and spend some time in a fantasy world when our country will once again be governed by kind, compassionate human beings.

Hi Suze60,

I am right in there with you. This series has been a life saver for me and my husband. We are long time fans. We watched it when it first aired and fell in love. We also watch it every four years during the elections. This year, it has been a lifesaver. We really need it to kill the pain of the election of Trump to the Presidency.

The trauma of his election has been very difficult to endure and it is just starting. The West Wing and President Bartlet and his staff are like a balm. We need the fantasy to face the reality of what we see as a disaster facing our country.

I agree we need kind, compassionate human beings to govern our country and it seemed like President Santos was going to be the same type of President that President Bartlet was.

I'm there with you! I started rewatching the series on Netflix a couple weeks ago, to soothe myself and be immersed in an "if only" scenario wherein the president is well educated, compassionate, well spoken person...kind of like the president we already have.

Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television.

Just reading the replies from you two makes me feel better. Thanks.

Perhaps what's most interesting about this thread is that, two years or so into the series' original run, we had another election stolen -- that one courtesy of the Supreme Court -- and the series provided much the same "sanity balm" during the darkest of the Bush years (although admittedly some of that darkness came from outside forces). Sorkin admitted during one of his voice-over commentaries (which is one reason I prefer watching the series on DVD -- it's something you don't get on Netflix) that 9/11 changed his perspective on government and foreign affairs, and that he never really could "get it right" during the last two years that he was still the principal writer, and it helps to explain the darker tone that began in Season 3.

I didn't discover this series until a few years ago, and watching it with a much better President in the Oval Office made it seem a bit more . . . resonant. Now we're back to having to use it as a kind of antivenin for the soul.

But it is a delightful show, with characters depicted as genuinely caring about the American people and the legacy to be left for our children and grandchildren, and not just how to use the powers of the executive branch to further enrich those who are already doing quite well, thank you very much. The dialogue and the interlocking storytelling, especially during the first two seasons, was so artful and complex that repeated viewings are still quite satisfying; revisiting episodes like "Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc," "A Proportional Response," or "In Excelsis Deo" are like reconnecting with old friends.

I've heard it said that what makes something a masterpiece is that you can always go back to it and find something you missed the first time. "The West Wing" certainly fits that definition.

I really understand what you are saying. This series got me through the Bush years. I am hoping it will provide the same "sanity balm" to me now. I do own the DVDs and enjoy them. Just today my husband and I were talking about restarting it.

We had lunch with some friends who were very upset about the election. They had never seen The West Wing. We recommended the show and they are now on a mission.

My mom and I started a tradition during the Bush years. After one of his speeches or press conferences, we'd watch "The West Wing" on DVD. I just bought the complete series so I would be able to watch episodes after Trump's speeches.

This is exactly the reason I'm binge watching it again now. I'm up to season 6. Told a friend I was loading up on what a decent presidency looks like - even if it is fiction.

I'm feeling the same way. However I do get depressed thinking how was I wish Martin Sheen would make a better president and seeing the inner workings of a fictional show what would really happen if that was what it will be like with the new administration

Yup. This is exactly why IMDB is getting rid of these boards. Posters like this who have nothing intelligent or even pertinent to add to the conversation. Just spewing their nasty, obnoxious bile.

I'll miss the boards, but not idiots like this.
