Fungus

I always thought it was a little strange that Fungus was in on Randall's evil plot, and yet was fully accepted as an employee of the revamped MI at the end. I'm sure someone could come up with an explanation for this, but it doesn't make sense to me.

It was actually Waternoose's plot in spite of Fungus's statement to Mike(he probably was clueless, really, as to the extent of Waternoose's involvement, in case he ran his mouth, as he tended to do), but no, no one has ever come up with a reasonable explanation for this. Fungus was STILL guilty of the conspiracy to bring in "toxic" human children, which was the only reason that Randall was even breaking any laws. He needed to bring in a child to test the machine, and that was illegal because of the perceived risk to MONSTERS from said child, NOT because they considered it kidnapping or cruelty. Fungus was as much a part of that plan as Randall was, and even jumped up and cheered, "HUZZAH" when Randall told him, "I got the kid", so Fungus was not only perfectly OK with that, but HAPPY about what was going to happen. Regardless, though, of how he felt, the fact that he did not report this to the authorities made him culpable in the crime itself, and he should have been arrested. But yet, he becomes a Comedian and is rewarded. Only Randall gets the severe punishment, which wasn't due process at all...just gets thrown into the Human World to be beaten possibly to death and eaten by Cajuns by two vigilantes who are still elevated to hero status. My only explanation is the whole notion that scaly, reptilian creatures are generally viewed as evil and undeserving of any real justice, and since Randall was scaly and reptile-like in appearance, he was the only one to receive the most severe treatment, while kindly, grandfatherly old Waternoose goes to jail and cute little Fungus avoids punishment altogether.

Maybe Fungus testified in exchange for immunity??

It's a possibility, but to show him still working there after an indictment, prosecuted or not, and to depict him as a wonderful guy who was totally blameless is pretty messed up. Randall did some very wrong things, but he was not the one in charge or only one guilty, but only he got the worst punishment. In doing what they did to HIM, Mike and Sulley crossed the line from good guy heroes to outright vigilantes, taking the law into their own hands, yet they are still portrayed as wonderful heroes by Disney-Pixar, that message being "two wrongs DO make a right if you're furry or cute". Few companies would have allowed Fungus to continue working there, immunity or not, because he WAS involved and he showed no regrets about that involvement, either. He certainly had no more problems with what they were doing than Randall did. We also see that the government agency responsible for investigating and prosecuting this case, the CDA, knowingly covered up Mike and Sulley's involvement as well as Randall's "disappearance", so perhaps they covered up Fungus's involvement, too, and he didn't even have to seek immunity, and when you've got a corrupt government agency involved, justice is not going to happen except on their terms. It is really ironic how much the CDA reminds me of our own NSA.
