Did Mike and Sulley first meet at Monsters University?
Just wondering because at the beginning of Monsters Inc when they're heading out to work, Mike says "You've been jealous of my good looks since the 4th grade".

shareDirector Dan Scanlon explained that line in MI as an example of Mike using hyperbole, like when a person says, "we've known each other forever". The answer to your question would be yes, Mike and Sulley first met in college.

Yes. They met at MU. That's what the new movie's about.
shareLol I had that exact same thought, thats why I came on this message board cuz I figured I wasn't the only one who noticed! XD
If you ask me it was probably a mistake. That line seems to have pretty clear intentions that they knew each other in the 4th grade, otherwise why wouldn't he just say "You've been jealous of my good looks since you met me" why specifically say the 4th grade?
Think about it. If you met someone in college and you say to them "You've been jealous of my good looks since the 4th grade" they'd look at you like ummm I didn't even know you in the 4th grade lmao. just my opinion.
Duh, when they wrote Monster's Inc., they didn't know they'd be making a Monsters University. The 4th grade line establishes a long-standing friendship between the two. That was clearly the intent.
When making Monster's University, they played with the idea of having Mike meet Sully in grade school then skipping to college, but they didn't feel it was working......Pete Docter and John Lasseter said not to sacrifice the story so the line was ignored.
In retrospect you can take the 4th grade line anyway you want - a f&^% up, a joking hyperbole, whatever.
Being that Sully's dad is supposedly well-known, it is possible that Mike knew of him before and the 4th grade thing could still play in and yes it's apparent it wasn't the intention to have a prequel initially but having been given a plot line they had plenty time to write a feasible mending of a story but time and complications I agree it was fine they didn't mention it. I would've liked to see Sully in elementary too though.
shareDan Scanlon and Co. actually started out to incorporate that elementary school rivalry into Mike and Sulley's relationship. There is a rough-animated deleted scene on the MU DVD, one of the "Extras", which shows Mike and Sulley meeting up for the first time on the school playground, while they were in the second grade. The kids are choosing team members for a game of either the monster equivalent of dodge ball or "Red Rover", and no one wants little Mike, probably because he can't stop running off at the mouth about how great a Scarer he's gonna be. The other kids are just tired of him. Sulley is the new kid, a stranger to everyone, and he comes out and climbs the monkey bars(or whatever monsters call those)and starts roaring, but you can tell something isn't right. He looks very out-of-place. The team that just picked Mike(because he was the only one left and they needed one team member) kick HIM off so they can invite Sulley, but Sulley doesn't want to be on a team. Mike starts teasing him about how he's not scary, and Sulley reveals that his dad is the famous Scarer, Bill Sullivan. Everyone is impressed...except Mike. Mike keeps up his ridicule, and strikes a nerve when he makes fun of Sulley's dad, who, as it turned out, has recently left home following a divorce, so young Jimmy Sullivan is dealing with that on top of being at a new school. A fight ensues, and both wind up in the Principal's office. They remain rivals, constantly trying to one-up each other, through the seventh grade, when Mike's family moves away. The filmmakers decided to not go with that, and instead, state that Mike's statement(which harkens back to a fourth grade class photo)was really just hyperbole, a figure of speech.
