Why didn't they make a sequel

I'd still watch it the prequel was okay but I'd rather a sequel set after this movie

Same here; I really want a sequel. However, I found the prequel excellent and fascinating...and possibly it's a good idea to lay out the backstory before revealing the future. :)

Apparently there was a sequel scripted but it was canned. IIRC, Sully finds out that Boo has moved house, so him and Mike enter the human world to find her. Sully & Mike have an argument and go their separate ways, Mike runs into Randall and the two of them bury the hatchet. Randall then helps Sully & Mike track down Boo.

Yes, I read about that script, and think it's exactly the film I've been waiting for since I saw MI in the theater.
I dearly hope that the canning was only temporary...but someday I shall work at Pixar and ensure that everything that needs to be made, is. >:3

I loved Monsters University, I still would not mind seeing a sequel to Monsters inc
