History Inconsistency

No way they could've known this when they first made Monsters Inc., but did anyone notice near the beginning of the film, when Mike says "you've been jealous of my good looks since we were in the 4th grade," and now we know that Mike and Sully didn't meet until their freshman year of college, circa Monsters University?

reply

Right; normally that would have made it canon that they grew up & attended elementary school together. But now with MU, the only way I can explain it is that Mike must've been joking around, pretending they'd known each other much longer because it felt that way by that point? Only thing I can think of! xD (They also likely shared their old photographs with one another, so each would know what the other looked like at that age...)

Director Dan Scanlon has explained this "inconsistency" many times, including in an extensive commentary on the DVD extras. It is an example of Mike using hyberbole, a figure of speech, like when someone says, "we've known each other forever".

That's not entirely what he said. That might have been his excuse, but they were talking about how they tried to make the timeline consistent with that line. But they said that to have them meet in elementary school and then "meet" again in college just didn't work for the story. They wanted viewers to believe they were meeting for the first time, and it woudlnt' have made much sense if they met in elementary school. They jokingly made a comment that the movie would be "Monsters Elementary." In the end, they scrapped the idea and just had them meet in college. So while he might have explained it as a figure of speech, the statement in Monsters, Inc. remains a loophole that couldn't be explained.

I just started watching Monsters, Inc again and noticed that myself.
