How old is Boo supposed to be?

I'm re-watching this film and I think Boo is so cute, but how old is she supposed to be? I was thinking she was about 3 or so.

reply

I think she's suppose to be 2 years old.

reply

3 years old.
During development, the character who was supposed to be Boo's age, gender, and race changed constantly. From a 30 year old man, to a 7 year old bullied & fearless girl (named Mary), to girl from Ireland, to African-American, and more.
Finally they settled that Boo should be a 3 year old girl.
Looks like they didn't do a good job at making Boo her age.

Seek to understand, not judge.

reply

Let's just settle with 2½.

Boo doesnt act like a normal child.

She has the motor and social ability of at least a 4 year old but the verbal ability of only a 12-15 month old.

Most 2 year olds use sentence fragments and real words for most of their speech -- Boo does almost all babbling with only a few real words sprinkled in.

reply

I thought that was odd (I babysat kids inbthat age range when the film came out). Now I will just assume she has delayed speech development and is actually 4 years old.

reply

I have a boy and a girl. When the girl was 2 years old she was EXACTLY like Boo.

reply

Same here. Yes, she COULD put together a two or three word sentence, but mostly it was single words. In fact, our daughter LOOKED like Boo. We considered having her Dad take her trick or treating with him in the fantabulous Sully costume Disney had, but we were living in the Caribbean and he would have ROASTED.

reply

My guess is 2

reply

2 years old. 3 at a push.

reply

At first I thought 2, but as it progressed and she was seen more often, I thought 3, but only because of the way she MOVED. Her babbling was that of a 2 year old AT BEST.

So I say she was 2 and-a-half. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

reply

I agree, also based off my cousin's kid who was very much like Boo and was 2 and half. He chooses not to talk too much but he is obviously able to understand and read a little already.

reply

I think 2. When I saw the film at the cinema with my mum and my sister, my sister thought Boo was six but my mum advised her that if Boo were six, she'd be talking properly. Meanwhile my mum thought Boo would be 2 or 3.

Well, I thought her speech was at the level of an older 1 year old and her drawing skills were at the level of at least a 5 year old, so when you average that out, you get 3 :) I loved Boo dearly, like most people apparently did, but I am an early childhood teacher, and her development was atypical in many ways. Of course, each child develops on his or her own timetable, and it is difficult to define "normal", but Boo's speech, at least, was well below average for a 2.5 to 3 year old, based on my experience, and if she were one of my students I would suggest she get a speech evaluation to rule out any problems. As a teacher, you can't give a medical diagnosis, but I think you can suggest an evaluation. That said, I still think Boo would be a delightful addition to any preschool class. It was also interesting that she was apparently completely potty-trained, but I think that scene, as cute as it was, was put in somewhat out of necessity - as I think it would have been awkward to imagine Mike and Sully changing a human child's diapers. (Somehow, I think that would have gone over especially poorly with Mike!)

I also agree that Boo's drawings were especially detailed for a very young child. I often don't see that kind of detail until a child gets to elementary school.

It sure is debatable! Physical appearance and motor development of a 4 year old, speech of a 1 and a half to 2 year old, and bathroom privacy issues past preschool age! I settle with 3 as her age, with delayed speech!

Let's face it, Boo walked away with the movie! Even for those that don't like kids, she probably stole their heart! My favorite part overall was when she attack (forgot his name) with a plastic baseball bat!

reply

Maybe she has some sort of learning disability that effects her speech.

After reading through all of that...I'm gonna go with, 2 1/2. ;)

2 1/2 is very consistent with most kids of that age I've known personally(and baby-sat). They can say some words, even string together rudimentary sentences, but still will fall back on "baby talk" quite a bit, especially when they're faced with situations that they don't have the words for yet. And of course, there's the crying and screaming and hissy fits and violent temper tantrums; people don't call this age the "Terrible Two's" for nothing! I don't personally recall MY vocabulary or lack thereof at the age of two, but my older family members like to remind me that I had my own unique words for a lot of things that didn't make sense to anyone else. I was also very artistic already by that age, and there are still some old church hymnals in storage at our little country church in which I'd drawn recognizable version of horses, airplanes, dragons and dinosaurs....LOTS of dragons and dinosaurs(I was already into scaly monsters), when I was around two years of age. The thing is, though, that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to child development. Some kids just start talking sooner than others. Some potty train quicker than others. Some kids' motor skill develop quicker than others. At that age, beween 2 and 4, children are changing so rapidly that one week they literally cannot speak in complete sentences, and the following week they talking a mile a minute!

She draws extremely well for a 2 year old. Most 2 year old scribble but she was drawing the monsters with great detail.

reply

I drew that well when I was two. I could also write my first name, although I used a round scribble in place of "O's". I could draw recognizable people, horses, dogs, dragons and dinosaurs at the age of two. Some people are just born with a natural talent that manifests at a very early age and I'd have to assume that Boo/Mary is one of those kids. Hopefully her folks and eventually her teachers will encourage that to the maximum, and not try to quell that ability as "useless" the way mine did.
