Such great voice acting
Seriously, this show is low key in a way, but the actors who do the voices are phenomenal. They have such good instinct and comic timing and rhythm. One of the best.
shareThe fact that many episodes were entirely unscripted & ad-libbed (aka "retroscripting") is what makes them funny. The people voicing the characters are great improv comedians themselves; that is where the humor is coming from. There was vague scripting, to fall back on in case they needed back-up jokes, but all 4 seasons were improvised using only scenario descriptions, leaving it up to the voice actors to entirely come up with their own dialogue. The reason they could do it that way is because it was animated using Macromedia Flash, and they could move the mouths of the characters after the dialogue; whereas with "regular" (cell) animated cartoons, they draw the whole thing out beforehand, and the voices are recorded afterwards to match up with the characters' mouths, and no deviation from the script is possible.
