shareHey just wondered how everyone believes Maori's keep their culture alive despite all the attempts that have been made to take it away??????
shareWhat attempts to take it away are you referring to??
Maoridom is alive and well in New Zealand, and no - one wants to take it anywhere.....
Yea I agree.I can't see anyone trying to take it away in New Zealand.
shareNOW no-one is taking Maori culture away, but in the past there have been, and also some attempts to record all the customs because Maori were thought to be dying out. It's interesting to see that two of Maori's first politicians Peter Buck and Maui Pomare sought, by way of politics, to get Maori to adopt more and more western customs and both sought the abolition of key Maori practices such as tohungaism, tangihanga and the hui, which are key Maori practices that still survive today. (Penguin History of NZ p 332) These are 2 Maori politicians! Still, they believed it was crucial for the survival of Maoridom so I guess they can be forgiven. As for other attempts, there were many examples of the government of the time trying to break down Maori society so they could buy land more cheaply (1850s and 60s), and for a while speaking Maori at school was prohibited, so a case could be made to support the argument that people tried to take it away.
shareItS StIlL ALIVE AZ......I DNT NO IF UR FROM nEW zEaland ae but here its alive as....the haka is one way we keep our tikanga (customs) alive........2 bad england didnt c it dat way in the last game ae!!!!!!! shareMaori customs are still very much a part of our culture. Even if you're a Pakeha.
You can't just make assumptions that the evil white man tried to strip everything that is Maori away from them.
That's absurd, sorry but it is. You don't live here so don't be all like "Ohhh there are no Maori customs anymore".
Whaaateverrrr. There so are!!
We integrate Maori words into things we do. Most towns in New Zealand are Maori names.
The Maori ways are beautiful and intriging and incredibly powerful.
BY THE WAY!!!!! - ALAINA?!
ALAINA TONGA?! IS THAT Y O U?
Craaaazy.

probably no point in me commenting in a thread thats almost 5 years old.
Just wanted to point out that where maori culture is dying is where thousands of maori youths think it's way cooler to act like they're straight out of Compton than to have any pride in their heritage.

Yeah, I refer to it as BET culture. It happens everywhere, and it's quite baffling to me. The kids want to be gangsters, and it's kind of funny they emulate these black guys who are just emulating Scarface who was created by a white guy. The irony of it makes my head hurt.
If this is what you wanna do, steal change with f@ck-biscut and the naked dummy, then go ahead!
maybe you are refering the Aboriginies of Australia?
shareAborigines never had a 'culture' to lose; unless, of course, you describe a 'culture' as one that lasts 30,000 years without even discovering fire or the wheel... Watch the black apologists explain that one away... go on... Revisionist historians make me ill.
shareAre you sure they didn't have fire?
How many peoples really discovered the wheel? Surely it could of easily been copied once one guy worked it out. Come to think of it, they has so much space, they didn't really have to compete for much. I would imagine they would be to busy trying to survive the land, more than the people.
