Why are their phones so small?

Why is Zoolander's phone so small in this movie? The screen must be tiny - how can you browse the web or view photos on something that size.

I think it's meant to be taking the piss out of people like that. Trends happen and people are wanting things smaller and neater

I'm not sure if you're joking, but when the movie was made in 2001, smart phones weren't a "thing" - so the fashion trend with phones was to make them as small as possible.

In late 90's I annoyed people by joking about my new phone. I said it's so small I can't keep it in my pocket - there's no pocket small enough (in reality it was a cheap phone about the size of modern smart phone.

It was a silly trend, and propably died fast because small phones weren't very obvious to strangers, who might get envious of one. In fact I remember a counter culture of people using early 90's phones, that were very large and impractical. I suppose it was some sort of decadent asceticism.

Phones in 2001 were not capable of browsing the web.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

Er, yes, they were. Phone have had WAP browsers since the late 90s.

reply

Yeah, but those browsers sucked and were slow as hell. And pictures were low resolution.

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

There was a short trend around that time where phones were made smaller and it was considered to be really cool to have a tiny phone. The Motorola V180 is a good example of that. Now they're trending to clown-sized huge.

reply

At the time the trend in cell phones was to make them as small as possible. The movie was just making fun of it.

reply

Ummmm.......it was a joke. An obvious one at that.

reply

You are right. At 26 minutes in he pulls out a very tiny flip phone. Ridiculously small.
