Banned in Malaysia..

I was really sad when I wanted to buy a Zoolander DVD while on my trip to Malaysia but I found out this was banned.

Man, it sucks.. :(

Like the guy said, everything's banned in Malaysia. I was shocked to see how many relatively mild (to me) films can't be shown there.

Honour thy parents. They were hip to the groove too once you know.

The film was also banned in neighboring Singapore due to bilateral sensitivities and the movie's excessive drug use.

How did you know it was "banned"? I currently reside here (Malaysia) and the way things work here (and in Asia in general) is they only show/sell movies that would appeal to the local market. Zoolander or Precious won't find their audience here. Most people in Asia when they think Hollywood movies, they think Jurassic Park or Gladiator kind of movies. Style over substance, or romantic, or easy to digest kind of movies. If the humor or the plot is too "western" it won't make it to the cinema.

If you don't see it in their theaters or in DVD stores, most of the time it's not because it's banned, just that it doesn't make them money. Movies is business after all.

But of course, that doesn't mean everyone in Asia doesn't watch good thought-provoking movies (duh). I'm only talking about what they play in theaters and sell in DVD stores.

By the way, it seems weird to me that you were specifically planning on buying a DVD of an old movie in a specific country lol.
