Roberts...Oscar?

The fact that she was even nominated was an enigma, but she won?? This woman has no talent, no charm, no appeal, and she takes home a thespians highest honor? Roberts isn't an actress, just a celebrity. One who doesn't deserve this coveted prize.

"Ahhh!...and boom goes the dynamite."

Honey, in Hollywood, it's all about MONEY, and Julia was the Cash Cow for tinseltown all through the 90's--and her performance in this was just good enough to justify that Oscar they gave her.

reply

The Oscars aren't about money, HONEY. If the were, Mamma Mia! would be sweeping this season. Add up the box office take for the five nominated films and get back to us.

EB, Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman are great performances by Julia Roberts. The rest? Not so much. The Oscar is based on single performances.

She is a very fine actress and very much deserved her awards for this role. Anyone who says differently is jealous of another person's success or simply regurgitation what he/she thinks they've heard other people say.

You missed out option number 3, Tanchalum.
Anyone who says differently is jealous of another person's success, simply regurgitating what he/she thinks they've heard other people say OR realises how Julia Roberts was not even in the same league as Ellen Burstyn that year.

Oscars more often than not are popularity contests. I don't know why people get upset when their favorites don't win, even when it's obvious (to them) that they got screwed in the process. IMO the fact that Roberts was even nominated for this sorry film was ridiculous. Michelle Yeoh should have won for Crutching Tiger Hidden Dragon, so there.

The Oscars definitely have a political side to them, but Roberts truly gained respect and admiration for this role. The backlash coming now is a little amusing considering how well she was praised at the time.

Personally, there's no doubt in my mind she deserved it. She's perfect for the part, delivers each scene honestly and realistically, and maes you genuinely care for the character, and the movie.

LAST MOVIE SEEN: Star Trek

I am not precisely the greatest fan of Julia Roberts but I gotta agree with all those who praised her performance in this movie.
It wasn't an easy roll, considering how Julia dress and talks in this film (BTW Just like the real Erin used to dress), his portrayal of Erin could have gone in the wrong direction and to end as a mere caricature. That doesn't happen here, Julia Roberts delivers a believable and compelling performance. Perhaps her best job to date.
Both Juliette Binoche and Ellen Burstyn gave Oscar-caliber performances that year as well, however Julia's Oscar wasn't undeserved at all.

200% agree, Julia doesn't deserve an OSCAR nomination, yet alone the OSCAR!

Such a disgrace, the Academy lost face with this one, as well as others earlier, and Sandra Bullock this year. Terrible.
