Funny oscar fact ...

In 1974, in "A Woman Under the Influence", Gena Rowlands gave one of the most extraordinary female performances ever as a well-meaning woman totally alienated by her desire to please everyone, yet she lost the Oscar to Ellen Burstyn who played a struggling mother in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore".

In 2000, in "Requiem For a Dream", the same Ellen Burstyn gave one of the most extraordinary female performances ever as a well-meaning woman totally alienated by her desire to please everyone, yet she lost the Oscar to Julia Roberts who played a struggling mother in "Erin Brokovich".

Weird how the Oscars go ... well, it's not that I think Julia Roberts didn't deliver a fine performance, but I felt, despite some great moments, there were some parts of her characterization too distracting from the serious material the film dealt with. I didn't know how to put it, until I read Roger Ebert's review, and I thought the late critic was dead-on regarding Julia Robert's performance.

What do you think?

I know people that know Erin(Hinkley folks) and said that's EXACTLY how she dressed & acted,at least at that time. I'm glad Roger saw her on Oprah, but she apparently didn't dress in her normal fashion or use her Sailor vocabulary on national television.

Robert Ebert was an ass, HE was distracted by Julia. If they had changed Erin's personality, it wouldn't have been the correct portrayal.

Loved the movie! Loved Julia in it. You can read the screenplay on line. It reads beautifully.
