a future?

I think we've accepted a reunion won't happen. If it did, the cast is too old to still be in high school, and I don't think anyone wants programming with a recast. I almost wonder if a sort of sequel could be done in the vein of a Broadway musical

Probably not.

The actors' feelings aside a reunion could be done just like it has been for many millions of people over the years. Just advance the characters' ages 20 years to reflect how long the show has been gone of the air (I know technically it was 19 years to this point but who's counting). Show what they are doing in their late 30's. Who stayed in town and who left. Who came back. Actually, 15 - 20 years out of high school left me with a few interesting stories. I was never the ladies man back in high school but I had a half dozen former female classmates check me out. Not to just talk but to see if I was available which I was not and still am not. All pretty good looking and maybe better than high school in a couple of cases. I went to school during a time when women did not dress sexy at all and the few that tried were scorned by their female classmates. Forward the clock 15 - 20 years and these women had substantial makeup and were dolled up in terms of clothing. Surprising given how things worked back in our school days.

Given the idea of the time jump, if they did a special, maybe it being New Year's Eve of 2000 would be a cool place to put it

They could come back to town for a class reunion. I could see:

Lindsay: A successful writer, married with 2 kids, NYC high-end apartment
Sam: Had growth spurt, surprised everyone by playing high school, then college football but injury stopped him from going further. Now gym teacher and coaches high school football, married with one son and one daughter, suburban home
Daniel: In and out of jail, homeless or stays in motels along highways
Kim: Welfare queen with seven kids, possibly another on the way, became grandmother at the age of 32, lives in low-income housing and always saying she should be given more
Nick: Joined military, found out he actually liked it and became a career man, lives on base with wife and son who he is steering towards military career.
Bill: Office manager at a distributing company, suburban home. Came out as gay, lover lives with him.
Neal: Now a plastic surgeon, beach house. Trophy wife, no children.
Nellie: Became a nun, lives in a convent
