The show that's responsible for the travesty that is Seth Rogen

The show is great, but I've always disliked Seth Rogen and had no idea how he kept getting hired. He has always been annoying, but on Freaks and Geeks he is SUPER ANNOYING! I see him come on screen and I just want to punch him in the face, especially in the title sequence where his hair is really short. He just looks like a mean, creepy person. And his character on the show (at least for the first half of the series that I've seen so far) is useless, pointless, has no story or anything - I have NO idea what he's even doing there! He just stands there looking like an a-hole and has maybe one line per episode. Busy Phillips has had much more story and screen time, and she wasn't even credited as a lead.

Just think of how much better comedy in Hollywood could've been for the last ten years if Rogen had never been miscast on this show in the first place. He truly is worthless and annoying.

Update: I just watched episode 10 and Rogen wasn't even in it. Not even a walk-on.

I didn't like Rogen in the first episode of Freaks and Geeks (thought he was a bad actor), but after that I liked Ken, and really like the episode where he has his, uh...problem with his girlfriend.

Outside of this show, I do agree that he is wildly overrated and tends to wreck things.

Strangely, though, I liked Pineapple Express, which was one of the Rogenest of the Rogens.

I guess, for me, it's a 50/50 shot with Rogen. But when he's bad, he's really, really bad (Green Hornet).

I agree with your Green Hornet comment. That movie was horrific.

I found Ken interesting primarily because he was a painfully realistic as*hole. He provided solid comedic relief as well. Obviously he wasn't likable at all early on, but it's not like that's a prerequisite to having a good fictional character.

As for Rogen himself, I've only bothered to watch 3 of his movies over the last 6 years (50/50, This is the End, Steve Jobs), so I've mostly been avoiding his stuff if I suspect it won't be any good.

He had a pretty great 3 year run though. From The 40 Year old Virgin to Pineapple Express, almost everything he did in that 2005-2008 period was really high quality I thought.

Rogen has two problems minimum. He thinks he is funny and thinks people care as to his politics. Once an actor fancies themselves as funny the creativity seeps away. It happened with Chevy Chase. Seth needs a Linda Ronstadt moment where he gets his butt drilled by an audience that does not give a darn as to his politics. Having said that I thought he was competent in F & G.
