People say that the show was canceled prematurely but most of the freaks like Daniel, Ken, Nick, Kim and Lindsay were all seniors anyways. The geeks were only freshmen but it would've been hard to do another season when most of the freaks wouldn't even be in the school anymore. Granted a few of them might not have graduated and would've had to repeat but Lindsay definitely would've gone onto college in the following school year.
I thought they were juniors. I'm pretty sure a teacher specifically said something to Daniel about being a junior again next year. And in the fake I.D. episode, Kim mentions that Daniel is already 18 and he says he was left back twice.
Yeah, I think you are right that they were juniors and not seniors. A small mistake on my part but it's not like they canceled a show prematurely that would've gone onto 5+ seasons on the air. They basically just canceled it 1 season too soon.
Yeah it felt short lived in being only one season but it certainly wrapped things up to where it works as a complete series and didn't feel like it needed to be continued but it still would of been nice
Two or three seasons total would have been good enough. As as far as Ken goes his grades were not good enough for a name college so he would have spent two years at the local community college to build his grades up for a transfer if he was seeking a four year degree. The bottom line is he would have been around for the sake of stories. If Lindsay's screen time was cut back then so be it for the sake of the big picture of having a multitude of characters to show. Maybe they could have Harold suffer a health scare so Lindsay stays around versus going immediately to college. Kids back then went home from college on weekends so Lindsay's college could have been close enough to make that happen.
I think it could've worked out. The different main characters would be split up in different groups and storyline, that's all. It's kinda how they did it in the first season anyway; not all the main characters were involved in the same storyline all the time.
If some of the characters moved on to college, the episodes could have jumped back and forth between the high school stuff, the college stuff, as well as the after-school stuff, like parties, concerts, dinners, dates, etc.
Heck, in the last episode, Lindsay decided to go traveling with the Deadheads. That could have been another storyline altogether. During at least a handful of episodes, they could show different situations she got herself into, maybe leading up to her decision to go back home. After that, there could be an entirely new storyline for her, having become a dropout that didn't go to any schools, would have to find a job, etc.
I think the show could have had tons of possibilities, as long as it managed to keep a few elements that tied all the characters together, allowing them to interact with each other regularly, despite them going in different directions in life. As long as they kept the spirit and vibe of the show alive, the characters could otherwise be put in many different storylines.

The storyline of Lindsay in the final episode would have been different if there were more episodes of season 1, let alone a season 2. It would have been such a waste of a talented student to blow-off a chance at going to an accelerated summer learning experience that she had. I had hoped Apatow and Feig would have had her right her own ship and push herself after that experience with other gifted students. It would have been a good storyline and dynamics that she still hung out with the Freaks, but continued to excel at school. After graduating HS, she could have been shown to be one of the few female engineering students at U of Mich. in later seasons.
Just my opinion.

Are you saying that for a fact, or are you theorizing? I'm not asking to be confrontational, I'm honestly just curious. Is there a DVD commentary or an interview somewhere that indicates this?
i don't really see a lot of college potential in the next few years really. the freaks, daniel, nick, kim, and ken were all juniors... lindsey was a sophomore sam, neal, and bill were like 13-14....
it woud have been at least the end of season 2 before any freaks graduated... with some of them being held back... and really... i'm not sure any of them were college bound, except maybe ken...
daniel i see getting a job in town, and nick might have shipped out, or told his old man to stuff it, and gottena job with daniel. those kinds of friendship dynamics tend to change drastically whena member of the group leaves...
i know they were looking at making kim kelly pregnant in season 2,a nd giving lindsey a major drug habbit... they could have had kim help lindsey get sober, and then had lindsey help kim get back into school, and working towards being the lawyer she wanted to be
all told, they could have gotten 3-4 really good seasons from those freaks, before transitioning sam and his new friends into the next generation of freaks
Hahaha, I thought the same thing about Ken being the only one college bound. I guess cuz he said he was going to inherit his dad's company and his dad probably would have made him go.
Part of its genius was its purity, every single episode offered fresh angles & we learned more about each single character slowly as we went along.
A second season might've included any/all of the following: - introducing new characters/friends which would've completely devalued its flawlessness. - introducing unwanted flaws & drama just for the sake of it, so as to stay fresh. - aging actors who we might've felt starting to grow out of their roles.
There've been dozens of good teen shows where most of us can pinpoint when they jumped the shark. I cannot for the life of me think of one that did not ever jump the shark. Even The Wonder Years was starting to wane its final seasons.
I could've seen great potential with Ken. He was evolving into an interesting complex character that was largely ignored in the early part of the season, being more of a comedy relief player. Even after graduation, we could've had him seen with the family business.
Daniel also had a somewhat turn on his personality in the last episode by hanging out with the geeks. Perhaps he finally got that cold water doused on his face that he was a loser and needed to change. It would be interesting to see him hang out more with the geeks to positively change himself.
Kim - didn't see much hope for her and she wasn't very likeable. Wouldn't have been surprised if they killed her character off in a car accident, which would also allow Daniel to finally move on.
As much as I loved this show when it aired and as upset as I was when it ended, I have to say that ultimately I feel it was for the best that it ended after one season. I never would have expected to feel that way but I do feel that way because from what I have read about what they were planning for the show the next season...just some of the worst, awful s*** ever. It's better that it died a quiet and dignified death rather than surviving what sounds like would have been a terrible future.
