Kim's mother?

I'm confused by the way she was portrayed in her two appearances. I mean, in Kim Kelly Is My Friend, she and Kim's step-father are the source of Kim's abusive household, but she seems like a completely different character when she appears again in The Diary. What do you guys think? Does this make sense?

Poor zebra, he's a prisoner in the zoo! Stuck behind bars, wearing stripes...

Since Kim Kelly Is My Friend was never broadcast I believe the writers/producers realized that they needed to soften her just up a bit. I also believe that she would be a little more relaxed out of her own home, away from Kim/other family members, etc.

But she is not nice in The Diary either: Kim is a dumb liar that uses drugs, all girls are wild, etc. The big difference between KKIMY and TD is that she isn't yelling but the thoughts are basically the same.

First off! I love the quote you have!
"Poor zebra, he's a prisoner in the zoo! Stuck behind bars, wearing stripes..."

TLDR; It might have been a gimmick to make sense, but if you look hard enough it makes more sense than you think.

I'm not completely convinced that the two characters are really "two characters". I kind of understand the parents reactions. If I had no filter in my behavior at all I would probably do the same things when I'm angry. Good thing we have those filters! I think the show isn't conveying that the mother is crazy. I think the show is conveying that everyone is a little crazy sometimes. Maybe we shouldn't judge "crazy" people before we walk a mile in their shoes? Isn't that what this entire show is about? Not judging? I mean, they humanize bullies, they transform dull characters into deep meaningful people, they turned a geek into a stud, and many many more things.

I mean, just because you met someone while they were in a crazy state doesn't mean someone is crazy. It just means that humans sometimes get overwhelmed with emotion and have no vents left to express that emotion. The woman sitting at the table wasn't completely rational. But seemed calm enough to seem rational. Why the heck else would Lindsey's parents read her diary? But if the woman on the driveway were to tell Lindsey's parents to read their Lindsey's diary they would've told her to f*%& right off.

Yes, it might have been a way to make it believable towards the audience. But I think it worked out well either way.

The first time we see her she's in her own house and fed up with her lying daughter. The second time we see her she's having dinner with the Weirs. She's just a parent talking to parents about their kids. Did you expect her to yell and scream at the Weirs house and chase them around?

reply

She wasn't nice in either episode.

She had a particular accent. Was it Minnesota/North Dakota or Maine?

reply

She had a Boston accent, since her actress is from Massachusetts, like me.

I think two versions of Kim's mom are based on her environment. In both environments, Kim Kelly is the main factor. Here is a mother who doesnt have the best home, best family and is always concerned for her daughter who lies/steals/has sex/does drugs/drinks/gets poor grades/skips class/hangs with not the best people. At her own home, she catches her daughter lying. At the Weirs's house for dinner, she is much more calmer because she isnt dealing with a teenager or a dead beat husband; shes dealing with maturer adults. She reveals to them she HAS to read Kim's diary to know the truth. Sure, she didnt present Kim in the best light but shes dealing with a wild teenager. You have to understand her frustration with her own daughter, who is unruly.
