The Karen Scarfolli character and especially Rashida Jones ruins it for me. There's just something I can't stand in her act, but it's not the fact that Karen is a bully. Even Alan isn't nearly as annoying, because the actor is ok. If someone better (at least for my liking) would've been acting the role, this episode might've been one of my favorites.
shareThis is the episode that made me fall in love with the show. About 5 or 6 years ago IFC was airing the show and I had never seen it, but had heard great things about it. The episode that was airing the day I found out IFC was airing the show was Kim Kelly Is My Friend. I watched it that night, then again when it was repeated the next afternoon. This was also when my cable company decided to drop the IFC channel so the only episode I got to see was this one. But I had loved it so much that I ordered the DVDs so that I could watch them all.
I was already a fan of Busy Phillips, Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley & Jason Segal from their later shows, Dawson's Creek, ER, Bones and HIMYM, but somehow I had missed Freaks and Geeks when it originally aired, probably because I was working when it was airing and never got a chance to see it.
I can also identify closely with a lot of the characters and the time period because I was a teenager starting junior high school in the early 80s. I graduated in 1985.

I've been over for dinner (back then) at people's houses and they acted the exact same way. I guess I was considered the nice, non-threatening friend to bring over and I'd just sort of absorb the scene. We had angry chicks like the "mean" girl who would easily fight a boy so the whole episode rang so true of my life back then. Easily one episode I can watch over and over.

My best friend's parents were alcoholics and all too often I'd find myself in the middle of a screaming match - between the two of them, between them and my friend, between them and their other kids. And because the kids had been raised with that kind of drama, they assumed it was normal and they'd get into screaming matches with one another too. This episode was amazingly real to me.

My favorite scene is where Kim catches Karen and Daniel at the park and she screams in rage and charges her car at them! Oh my Lorde! I loved it!!
"kim kelly is my friend anyones fav" Only because it focuses on why Kim is the way she is. Her home life is terrible her mom calls her a whore and makes ridiculous assumptions about her friends based on rumors. So it makes sense why she's so mean to someone like Lindsay who has a nuclear family. She expects to be harshly judge by normal people. Kim won me over by the end of the episode. Most of which was Busy Phillips acting. My only complaint is why she told such an outlandish lie and didn't bother telling Lindsay to research Benton Harbor. So her mom wouldn't catch her lying. But knowing Kim she probably didn't expect Lindsay not to judge her or care that her life's a *beep* show.
