Re-Watched Again...

Not a bad show per se, but I'm just not understanding the love fest surrounding this series. That's okay to say here, or is this thread gonna get deleted because it isn't showering the show with praise?

You're entitled to your opinion. The series just didn't speak to you(apparently not as much as Leave It To Beaver). F & G was my favorite series of all time. The writing, casting, acting, authenticity were all brilliant. Too bad you missed it.Thanks for revisiting the series regardless.

That is where I hit the fork in the road. Brilliant just isn't the word I would use for this series, like at all.

Although it was depressing at the time the show was cancelled it may have been a blessing in disguise as it produced 17 1/2 almost perfect episodes. It didn't have the time to jump the shark!

I agree with everything in your post especially the fact that ALL of the characters(principals/supporting/cameo)were all authentic and intriguing....thanks to the writing and nuanced acting.

I used to watch this with my teenage daughter. We would routinely turn to each other during an episode and nod/smile in disbelief on how charming/entertaining the series was.

One of a kind!!

The Wonder Years did it better, and I hate Fred Savage.

I enjoyed the Wonder Years as well as Leave It To Beaver, btw, but I thought the acting and the writing were superior in F&G. Although, I will concede, TWY sustained for a much longer period. I know it's irrelevant but just look at all the phenomenal actors/actresses that were featured in F&G. You may not enjoy some of the films made by the principals ut the success is undeniable.

reply

There were "phenomenal" actors that came from "Alf". I just don't understand the ball handling Freaks and Geeks gets.

Eddie Haskell, such a wise guy, I'm sure you were being facetious(and by the way did you know that facetious is the only word in the English language where the vowels follow a,e,i,o,u and if you use the adverb facetiously, you have them all However, in the event you were being serious, for the record, please specifically list the scary talented, successful cast of Alf....

I think the core problem is, as you mentioned, you just "don't understand" the ball handling(?) surrounding F&G. Just let it go and move on to another series, apparently Alf, that is a better match for your skill set. There are a swell bunch of super hero movies that won't be too trying. Popcorn movie fare.....

You don't have to try to go with the highbrow insults, I just do not understand the love fest surrounding this series. So instead of trying to be pseudo-intellectually snobbish about it, I wish someone would explain WHY this series is supposed to be so great beyond "oh the acting is soooo good". Or just the plain ol' "it was phenominal".

Any further explanation would be like pearls before swine...you being the pig in this instance. There's a swell new Batman movie this week...enjoy!

Wow.. people like you really exist.

That all you got? Okay. I guess the show does suck afterall

It's hard to explain because it's so subjective. I for example HATED Arrival and Drive. I was stunned at how bad they were. Lot of people liked them though. Same with Freaks and Geeks - some liked it and some just don't get it. It hit me just right in every way - casting, timing, writing, atmosphere, you name it. Can't quantify it though. And people on IMDb will get really grouchy when someone asks why something is good or bad. Not a welcoming place to be sure.

Here's the thing... not everyone thinks the same. We don't all like the same things.

Threads like this always make me laugh, because it's like you think your opinion is worth more. Of course, to you it does. But to me it does't. So I have no idea what point you're trying to make. Does it bother you that you don't agree with fans? Or does it bother you that the fans don't agree with you? I don't get it.

reply

The Wonder years doesn't hold a candle to Freaks and Geeks.

So I have no idea what point you're trying to make.

Waitaminute...so one person not agreeing on a board full of people creaming over this series isn't valid because of "majority rules"? Because that's what you're getting at ya know.

I just watched the series for the first time. I think I can see why it's got a cult fan base. There's something about the naturalism and subtle humour that makes it a bit different. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan, myself. I certainly enjoyed it. Maybe it was a bit cosy in some ways. It's big asset was the realism and characterisation.

Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way.

I love F&G because it isn't saccharine sweet, the characters feel real and credible. It's a well written show with gifted actors giving excellent performances (that don't actually seem like 'performances' because they're so genuine).

It also appeals to my sense of humour. The humour in the show is generally derived from believable human situations and reactions, rather than conveniently contrived plot devices. The show's content accurately reflects the time it's set in which makes it nostalgic.

As I said, it's not sickly sweet but it still manages to capture an innocence that the world seems to have lost. There are no airhead, plastic-fantastics trying to mimic the latest Kardashian, or drug-f'ked degenerates cooking up a batch in the kitchen. AND there's no incomprehensible social media!

It's reminiscent of a world and time I'd like to be living in.

When you consider some of the tripe that continues for years on end, it's astonishing to me that only one season was made. But maybe that's a good thing - it went out before it went down.
