Alistair's grandmother

Wasn't it said before that Alistair's grandmother went crazy after the death of a loved one or something? Then it was mentioned that Sheridan could of inherited her insanity? How does that work exactly? When there's a CAUSE for insanity why would it be hereditary? What was she already a bit nuts and simply went over the edge or something? This actually explains a lot in regards to the Cranes, perhaps the reason Alistair was so evil is because he inherited it from his grandmother? The reason Pretty and Vincent seemed so mentally unhinged.... thoughts?

Mental illness is heriditary, although that doesn't necessarily mean that you will inherit the illness,in some it can lie dormant and simply transfer to their offspring. But I definitely think Alistair had a mental illness. However, if you think about it, the Crane's were also cursed by Tabitha so in that light you could simply say that any mental illness or ill fortune that struck them was due to their curse.
