Secret Societies, with the intent on filling positions of power, with their own aims and motivations, are simply not a good way of producing leaders. Often, these societies have their own motivations and aims which may not coincide with their electorate or the rest of the (American, in this case) population.
It is the manner of attaining power and having hidden goals that cause issues with secret societies.
