NO CHEMISTRY BETWEEN SANDRA AND VIGGO?

IS IT JUST ME COZ I HAD NO IDEA WHILE WATCHING THE FILM THAT SANDRA'S CHARACTER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY ATTRACTED TO VIGGO'S UNTIL I WATCHED THE DVD EXTRAS? I THINK ITS JUST BAD ACTING ON HER PART. I NORMALLY REALLY LIKE HER AS WELL. I KNEW HE LIKED HER BUT NOT THE OTHER WAY ABOUT. WHAT DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK?

reply

I can't speak for the content of the DVD extras. From the regular movie, I agree that they had no chemistry. But that wasn't a mistake; it was an intentional point of the plot.

Eddie--along with his chemical addictions--was an apparent sex addict. Sandra--along with her chemical addictions--seemed prone to dependancy relationships. Although they were at the clinic to work through the chemical addictions, their sexual/relationship problems would've become more apparent to them. In real life, any romantic relations between them while in recovery would've been awkward, reluctant and dysfunctional, exactly how it appeared in the movie.

It may seem hokey, but sex/love addiction is a real phenomenon. Compusive instances of viewing internet pornography, seeing prostitutes, having casual and anonymous sex, and abusing people sexually are all symptoms. I've heard from some people coming out of clinics that more people were there for some form of sex addiction than any other addictive behavior. Ya, they didn't have much chemistry. But scipioUofR is right. They really shouldn't have had any. So, I think it was a good thing that it was the way it was. You know? People really do become addictied to sex. But a lot of times there is something else that sex addicts are addicted to. Drugs or alcohol, you know? So, whatever. It was actually important to the plot that there wasn't a big thing of chemistry between them.

Wouldn't a rehab clinic for sex addicts be more like a Club Med?

I have always liked Sandra Bullock and Viggo Mortenson as actors individually but I must agree that they had no chemistry in this film at all...I think the writing was partly to blame because the script never really makes clear the alleged attraction between the two.

reply

Are you people insane!

The only reason you think it's bad acting on her part is because of the character! The character is conflicted because she's already in a relationship!

I think they had a great chemistry all their own.

reply

Oh...actually I thought they had amazing chemistry. I really thought they were perfect.

reply

I agree...am not really sure what others in this thread mean by them having zero chemistry.

I noted that in "Lord of the Rings" Viggo had no chemistry with Liv Taylor. He is a good actor, but not a good on-screen lover. He seems imploded in his emotions, not good at a flowing interaction with a female. It could just be ego, it could be that isn't his forte.

In fact, as far as Sandra Bullock is concerned, I don't think I've ever seen her well matched in a film. Maybe it's like figure skating, some athletes are excellent singles performers but cannot pairs skate; others are perfect pairs skaters but don't shine alone.

I think both Viggo and Bullock are individual skaters.

annmason1 I guess you're so right! I never thought about this but now that you mentioned it I realise why there was something wrong with the interpretations of Sandra and Viggo with their parteners in all their movies. They are individual skaters indeed. They act exactly the same evertime no matter of the partener I don't think I can find a specific interpretation of them to really like, to really think about chemistry. I've seen Sandra with a lot of parteners but she acts just the same I can't think of a chemistry between her and any of her parteners.... (maybe Keanu Reeves?...). The same for Viggo I've seen him with a lot of female parteners but didn't see any special chemistry with any of them...

Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant had GREAT chemistry in Two Weeks' Notice and really should act together more often.

I also like her with Keanu.

Clearly you have not seen A Walk On The Moon. Viggo Mortensen and Diane Lane had so much chemistry I am surprised the camera did not ignite. I also thought he and Liv Tyler had metric *beep* of it as well in the LOTR movies. I thought what was between him and Sandra was stilted, but that it was supposed to be that way. It felt more real than a lot of depictions of romantic entanglements in film. Life is messy, and life in rehab is most likely messier still.

I just seen this film and thought that exact same thing throughout the whole film. There is zero chemistry there.
