$12M studio film?

I was listening to the DVD commentary today, and was surprised to find out that this was actually a studio film! A lot of times people talk about a movie being made for a small amount of money, but its small budget not really showing up on screen. This is an example of the opposite. $12M is a small budget for Hollywood standards, but this film looks like it was made for....about half a mil. Literally, from the film's opening shot, I felt this flick had "straight-to-video" written all over it. Even the font used for the credits looked "straight-to-video" to me. The only sign that this a studio film is Taye Diggs being one of the stars. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the film as a guilty pleasure. But it sure as hell doesn't look like a studio film.

It was released by Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment. I worked there when this was released. It was in the theatre for five seconds so yeah, it might as well have been straight to dvd.
