Questions about the ending.

1) Who ever was in charge of turning the land into a lake, shouldn't he/she have checked if there were houses there? Or if there were people and animals?

2) Only the 4 guys survived? The others drowned?

3) PENNY notices that EVERETT got the wrong ring, but right before the wedding. Didn't he give it to her when he returned to town?

reply

1) & 3)..No one was living there...the area was empty. The boys went back there (Everett and Penny's old cabin) to RETRIEVE the ring from the roll top desk (the ring that Penny wanted, not the one Everett gave her). The Marshall and his posse were waiting there only to catch and hang them. (Re-watch the scenes between Penny and Everett after Pappy O'Daniel pardons them

2) I'd say yes the all drowned

Still, it's a matter of security. Or maybe there were signs that they all missed?

reply

Granted I am only one year late to this post...

The land and all the houses would have been evacuated, they were all likely trespassing for their own reasons.

Also, keep in mind that they would open the dam to flood the area and it would take DAYS to flood the area, our little "wall o' water" is just pure fantasy.

I see. Thanks!

She thought it was in the roll-top desk.

Since it is ambiguously a miracle, rational explanations don't necessarily have to make sense. But there is no need to remove houses that are going to be destroyed anyway. And people and animals may have wandered back in after they did their checking.

Well, the Devil can't be killed, right? I would assume that the Devil, his Deputy Devil, his 3 gravedigging Imps, and his Hell Hound, merely got washed away in the giant baptism. But if you insist on being "rational" about it, sure ... all mortals present should have died, including the 4 heroes.

Dunno. I assumed the final scene occurred shortly after Everett's reture. We just have to accept that he triumphantly announced his success before he actually showed her the ring.
